bypassing the neutral safety switch 200

Is it safe to bypass the neutral safety switch and drive around? I need to replace mine, but it is my only car. So I am hoping it is ok to bypass it and drive to the pick n pull. I am driving a 1987 245 automatic. Thanki.

    Just my opinion... YES

In fact, The manual Trani Volvo do not have one. ( on my '89 anyway)

I jumpered out mine on my wifes '85 Pickup ( manual trani) My thought is, If the car dies in the middle of the road...Fist gear and the STARTER will get me off the road OR off the Railroad tracks.

It has become habit to grab the Shifter and push in theClutch before starting teh car.

My Jeep, Automatic trani. No Safety switch..againit's just habit to grab the shifter and make sure it's in Park

Thanks for the help guys. I managed to get the old switch working this morning, and went to the yard and picked up a replacement.

I would think that it cannot be too much different than driving around a manual trans car right? Don't try to start it in other than P or N and you should be ok.

I'll agree... much more dangerous to accidentally start a manual trans 240 while in gear... and there's no safety switch on those. Ask me how I know.

It's definitely an ethical dilemma or sorts: in a sense, you're disabling a safety feature, and you *will* have to fix it properly before you sell the car.

Just be careful!... rule of thumb for any car: foot on brake when starting.

Sorry, no, if you try to start the car with the switch bypassed and the car is in gear, you will have problems. Don't ask me how I know... one damaged knee requiring surgery.
