question of radiator 200

This morning, wehn I tried to fix the whinshield washer , I found the coolant reservioer is empty.

After put some coolant into it ,I found the coolant leaked out from one hole(number 2) loacted in the right top of the radiator.

The radiator was replaced by a shop 5 years before.
It is SPECTRA PREMIUM Part # CU83 {#83}.

What it should be(open VS close)?
If I need to buy a cap to close it,Where to buy?

Thanks.

are you aware your transmission coolant lines are missing?
or were they just disconnected?

question of radiator 200

hello,
i had a similar problem in my 86 245.

as a temporary fix that lasted for 3-4 years until i bought a 3 row rad, i did this.

1) unscrewed the ring.
2) took 2 of those round plastic upholstery black things that holds the felt panel underneath above the knees.
3) placed them back to back and used rtv blue sealant as an adhesive and sqeezed them together to make a little plastic assembly.
4) put blue rtv inside the inner ring nut and seated the plastic assy into it. it fits snugly right into the inside of the ring.
5) i did not use rtv on the side of the radiator and the plastic piece facing into the radiator, i cut off the extension.

6) i tightened up the nut into the radiator and i was done. i did let the rtv dry first. i still have that radiator as a spare, never has leaked again.

cheap, fast, easy, and worked.

regards,

I have to tell you that I think the loss of the plug is a recent occurance; you can's have been driving around for five years with the cooling system open like that.

If you top up the reservoir to the prescribed level the coolant will flow out of that hole until the level in the radiator reaches the bottom of the opening. Surely you have occasionally checked the level of the coolant in the reservoir and in fact found some there.

As mentioned this is where a temperature sensor (of sorts) is used on the 700 series cars that use the same radiator.

I helped a stranded 240 owner by going to Advanced Auto and purchasing a plug designed for iron pipe that I screwed into the rubber grommet (that is shown as being still in place on your radiator). You might pull the grommet and take it with you to Home DePot, Lowes or any hardware store to get one of the correct diamter. Globbing it with silcone and screwing it in will make a semipermanent fix of it. It needs to be a size that will screw into the grommet when it is in place in the radiator. Just being able to be pushed into place probably won't do it. If you add silicone let it cure before returning the car to service.

Go to the hardware store and ask for a expanding rubber plug, It will have a brass washer on both ends and the side that faces out will have a nut on it. find one that slides in without to much play, tightening up the nut will expand the plug and seal up the hole.
I believe the hole is there for an electric fan temp sensor, you dont need it on your car.

I don't know where you'll find that part today, But I think you can order one from fcpgroton.com. It won't be a plug but a temp sensor switch for a radiator fan. You might have to contact "spectra" and order the real one from them.

You might buy one of those Unibrew Beer bombers, and shove the cork into the hole for now. Enjoying the beer should also help with the problem.

I don't think that you should use the car until you fix the problem though.

Thanks.

I bought this car last July and drive like this without any problem until this morning I found the whole keep open(It might keep open from 2001 when the shop installed it.).

I need google to find the way to contact "spectra".

That really is amazing that you drove since last July with a gaping hole in your radiator without a problem.

The situation needs to be resolved without question.

Have you considered the purchase of a beverage?

Measure the inside diameter of your hole. Then go to a good hardware store and ask for an expanding rubber plug that is just a little smaller than your hole. It has a wing nut on one side that you tighten up to make it expand until it fits nice and snug in the hole. Cheapest & fastest permanent fix.
