Radio problem 700

I have the stock radio on my '87 740 GLE.

It seems to have a mind of its own. Sometimes the display will work, and sometimes it will be black. From time to time the signal will fade out, and the backlight will dim or go out.

Whacking the console with my fist will sometimes fix it, or make the speakers pop.

I thought it was a loose connection somewhere, but when I took the radio out it appears to be hardwired in place and the antenna and that black plug thing are in tight.

Any ideas why the radio does this? Can I fix it or should I replace the radio?

Side note - I pulled the radio from an 89 740 and the radio had a grey plastic connector. Why is mine hardwired and the newer one removeable? It would make things much easier.

I tried fixing mine, the bulbs are called "ear of wheat" , trying to unsolder them ruined the circuit boards.
The proper name should be speck of dust bulbs.
Replaced the whole rig with a $40 junkyard one that works perfectly.

My car is a 1990 740 and theres plug harnesses behind the radio, yours might be in a bit deeper but they're there.

There are a few connections that aren't too hard to get to that you can try touching up with a soldering iron. I haven't looked at one in a while but they're along the edge of the ckt board in the left rear corner looking at the radio from the front. Can't remember though if it's on the top or bottom. Haven't seen too many on e-bay lately but I happen to have a couple that work. If you're interested give me an e-mail. lgspooner@verizon.net

    I've just been through this.
The backlight in the LCD display can only be repaired by the most skilled electronics solderer. The inside of this unit is a tight maze of circuit boards that looks impossible to disassemble. It's that bad.

However I am not among those who would rather have an aftermarket replacement.
These units are alpine at thier best.

Your best bet is a tested Ebay unit for 20 or 30 bucks, or a pick and pull find.
    Keep it Volvo.

I like the Volvo system and intend to keep it stock. The tape player is nice because I can listen to my iPod through it, and the stock speakers are decent (and riveted in place!).

I grabbed another Volvo radio at the junkyard and I was going to put it in, but it looks like I'll need to splice some wires. Sounds like a project for this weekend!

      Thanks!
