Interesting 122 on ebay 120-130

Any thoughts? I like the economy of the engine, but not sure about how much work it would be to make it happen for my project. Looks like it is still using the hydraulic clutch..

I bought this, but haven't picked it up yet.

The former owner really put a lot of new parts into it, time, effort, money. I will see in a few weeks how well the details were done...

I look forward to seeing how the engine integration was handled to the chassis as OBD-II likes to see speed inputs and so forth. Wiring is parallel, that is, the Ford harness and Volvo harness are side by side (new Volvo harness).

He says he's selling it because, although he built it for his wife, with the new baby she wants a larger vehicle which is better set up for children (he mentioned a 2001 Taurus). He has driven it over 600 miles since the accident; about 5600 since the engine conversion (using a Merkur T9 transmission, for those who were curious), supposedly it was "running just right and everything working"...just in time to hit the deer. Ouch!

The bumpers were bent and rusty so were left off; I'll just get some nicer ones from somewhere. I saw a stainless one on eBay but I have no idea if the price is reasonable...I'm still learning my way around the Volvo parts world. Having a bumper is a priority, though!

Brakes will come too, but bear in mind this Focus engine is actually pretty close in HP and torque to a stock "sports" B20, so they aren't a priority...yet.

I will see how I like it; I have the parts now to fix the snout, replace the radiator and so on. 34+ mpg is a powerful incentive to leave this one mostly alone and build something else to be more powerful (and thirsty)...especially since this car will be driven daily.

If I do change, it will probably be to a turbocharged B20 or B21 (although if I somehow find a B30, that's fair game too!)

Since this is my first post on brickboard (and my first Volvo, although my mom had a DL wagon, my dad had a PV544 and a 122 before I was born, and dad and I have both had Saab 99 and 900 models...oh, and my ex has a 245...but she doesn't count anymore), it's nice meeting you all and I look forward to many happy years of Volvo ownership (and based on the condition claimed for this 122S, it should outlast me!).

Sorry for the long rambling post.

    Ben Wolf

      Ben,

Welcome to the BB and to Volvos! You have a project on your hands, but it looks like a good start. Good luck with it, order up the vintage catalogue from IPD.

He did mention a new child. I know when mine came along, most of my volvo tinkering went by the wayside.

As I have noted before. I still do not get people go to so much trouble to "upgrade" an amazon but do not install a modern (read 1800E or 140) braking system.

too bad I'm so cash-poor these days. Wichita is not too far from here...

Being sold because of a nagging wife?

Maybe he's been lucky enough to get a good insurance pay out and still has the "Wreck" as an asset. $2k's worth of panels plus grilles, paint and shop costs would probably write it off if he had a good full policy. Almost certainly would in the UK. Looks as if he never had any bumpers. Wonder what happened to them.
