steering rack part 700 1986

I need one of the metal hydralic lines that attach to two points on the steering rack, specificly the bottom one which developed a pinhole leak. Has anyone got one from a bad rack that I could buy? Thanks.

    steering rack part 700 1986

It's a cold day to lay under a car. I got the proper part installed on the rack but I'm unsure of how tight I should turn the two nuts. The one original I can see on the rack is seated further down and the pipe doesn't have any play to it when I push on it. The new one so far can move around a little bit. Not loose but it feels like it's floating in the o rings. I don't want to over tighten it and crush the o rings or flanges. I'm thinking to leave it as it is, add fluid and start the car and see if it leaks. So, what do I do next?

Good luck, on my '90 744 TI, the pinhole was caused by rubbing against the other line where you could not see it. As soon as I replaced the line, the other let go!

Be CAREFUL, the threads on the fittings are SUPER FINE, the rack is softer than the fitting, any slip and you will cross-thread it. NO repair is available for the threads.

BTW, there are O-rings inside the fittings, the fitting IS NOT a tapered thread.

I held it in my hands. My indy shop, Especially Swedish, was able to get the part from Hudson Valley Volvo who actually had it in stock. Cost is about $50.00. I'll buy it later in the week when I have the funds and then my $200.00 wagon will hopefully be complete.

Almost got it. First came fuel line but that I think blew up like a balloon from the pressure as the hose kept pulling off the right side connection. Next I tried what you see here but I over tightened the left side hose clamps which weakened the hose and the pressure found it's way out that way. So I replaced the short piece of hose and carefully tightened the clamps just enough. So far it's holding. If it make it to summer I'll reroute it over the rack out of a stick's way. One thing's for sure by now: The rack is flushed.

I didn't see any image, bat gather you patched the hydraulic line with runbber hose? That's a bad idea, you could foster some accident when that thing suddenly craps out.

Did you check FCP for prices for new lines?

I couldn't get the image to upload, even though I hosted it. The user FAQ is down. FCP told me I had to buy the whole rack. The hose I used is not plain rubber. It it reenforced fuel line. The great majority if the repair is copper line. Two short peices of the fuel line are used to couple it in. At each coupling point only about 0.1 in. of hose is under system pressure. I don't see how this would fail as long as I don't crush the hose with the clamps.

I don't mean to offend you S, but do you really understand how high the system pressure is?

          Correct Pressure:

          Saginaw: 5.5- 7 MPa (780-1000 psi)
ZF, early production: 7.5 MPa (1005 psi)
ZF, late production: 5.8 MPa (825 psi)
          [Volvo Service Manual, Group 64, Steering, 1975 -, Page 66, Operation K21]

You should heed my warning, or you shall suffer the greatest imprecations.

          Veraciously,
          Goatman

Heeded you are. The rubber hose is all it seems to be and it just ain't holding. I thought it would but obviously as you point out the system pressure is extremely high. If I can't get my hands on the correct part I will try to make my own. I do have a double fairing tool. This may be the only and last time I buy a car that sat unused for three years parked by the Hudson river. At least I only paid $200.00 for it. Such is my cheap approach at the rack repair. I have another identical 7 that's been a saint.

Compression Unions and Brake Line if needed 700 1986

I don't think your double flare tool will work, since the rack lines I've seen are ISO "bubble flare", like our Volvo brake lines.

I would try a 3/16" I.D. Compression union, which will span a 1/8" cut-out section to get rid of the leaking pin hole.

Take one end of the line loose for working access. Worst case you can splice in a section of brake line (Autozone, etc.) using 2 compression unions. I believe they will take the pressure OK.

I got my 89 740 cheap because the rack "needed replacement".
After degreasing it turned out to be a leaking pipe.
I replaced both pipes from Volvo and if you call FCP with the part nr,
I think they can get it.

    For the 89 740
    here's the two part numbers:
    Pipes: 1387357 & 1387358
Sorry I don't know which is which.

(I considered a "Rube Goldberg" patch, but opted to replace both)
Maybe you could clean up the pipe with the pin hole/ wire brush it
tightly wrap with steel picture hanger wire and cover with liquid steel
or JB weld or somesuch miracle product and get by?
Be sure to post back what happens.

    Bill

We went through this last year with an '88.

Either source one from the dealer or take it to a local shop that does hydraulic work, and have them make up a short line with the fittings you need. It should not be terribly expensive.

The parts stores (even FCP Groton) will just look at you funny if you ask them for it. Apparently it is available through Volvo though as a special order part.

Good luck with that otherwise filthy job. Hint: Degrease everything you can before you take it all apart, racks are allergic to dirt.
