Hi folks, been away from the Board for a while. I'm sure I was missed! (Yeah right!)
Anyway, as usual life has been keeping me busy, maintaining my own cars and a few for other people as well as doing a major restoration on my 1970 VW bus. The projects never end do they?
Today, we had an unfortunate death in the family: my brother's 1987 245 lost the transmission. It was being driven back from Boston on I-90, and apparently ate up the M47. I haven't had my hands on it yet but from the description, it's all done.
It was driving along in 5th at highway speeds when she felt a shudder, grinding, loss of power. Downshifted to 4th and that went away and worked ok... til she got to a toll booth. Then there were no gears except 4th!!! Reportedly a "Bad smell" too though maybe it's coincidence. The shaking could have loosened up something else.
Anyway it's coming back to my house sometime this morning and I'll get my hands on it. It has had a bit of a crunchy 3rd gear since I picked it up for him. We never did anything for it except to adjust the clutch. It does have around 300K on it, so it's not like it didn't lead a full life.
Anyone with a spare M47 kicking around, especially in New England or maybe NY/NJ please call or email me. myvwsgotme@snet.net or (860) 912 6882.
Thanks folks and keep em rolling!

Find the newest M47 you can. I had two '91 M47s to choose from, and both had the fill plug located higher on the case than the one from my '87 240. The '91 had a boss that was not even on the '87 case, so they did revise it at some point. But you're going to overfill it anyway, right? ;)
My '87 box with ~240,000 hard miles got stuck in 5th, then when I ripped it out of gear, it was stuck in 1st while the shifter was in neutral. Bearing failure, I believe. The fluid was very silver/metallic colored. The shift gate on the top (the part that comes off when the cover is off) was coated in a metallic paste.
That smell you mention...was it the clutch after pulling away from the toll booth in 4th gear? That's my guess.

Sorry to hear about that. Not fun.
I don't have a tranny for your brother but I know a couple self service yards in MA that had plenty rwd Volvos in stock a year ago. Both about an hour and fifteen minutes from southeast CT but not near each other. One is outside Woonsocket RI, the other kinda near Seekonk, in E. Freetown. Forget the one in Southington, you might a 240 there on any given day.

Thanks Bruce-
I'll be knocking on European Auto's door in the morning.
I do miss Autowerkes, they always had great parts cars.
Hope they build their new shop soon.
