1990 volvo transmission fluid change question 200

First of all, I would like to appoligize for the way I have been posting threads. I didn't really make it real readable and didn't really put much effort in my typeing skills. I would like to change my tranny fluid as an effort to improve gas millage. Can I just remove that bolt underneath the tranny pan in the center and leave the engine running as the fluid drains? if i don't put it in gear or anything mabey it will still drain out? It is mentioned that it only drains 2quarts through the pan. Or do I have to disconnect the tranny lines and drain it that way? To me that would be a waste of a case of fluid.

If you do the flush by yourself 200

You can place the jug (eg. windshield antifreeze bottle) being filled on the rad rather than the ground. You can watch it while it fills as you cycle through the gears (parking brake on, foot on brake pedal) and shut-off the engine when the fill mark is reached. Fill with fresh fluid and repeat till fresh fluid starts entering jug.

(Yep, some of your previous posts have been a bit "tedious".)

It's an 8 quart system I believe, if you only drain the pan you are mixing two quarts of new fluid with six quarts of old. Doesn't seem like a thorough flush, does it? However, some people do this several times with a short drive between each fill and by the time you've done it with 10 or 12 quarts of fluid, you've pretty much replaced the majority of old stuff.

The radiator line, if it isn't frozen, is actually a much easier way to get old fluid out.

Do NOT let the engine idle if you drain the pan. There needs to be fluid there for the pump to suck up.

I really don't think a tranny fluid drain or flush will help your fuel mileage. However if you do decide to do it for other reasons(routine maintainence)then do not just drain pan and replace. That really doesn't do much. Do it properly by doing flush procedure thru tranny cooling line. This way all the fluid is circulated and changed. What is sitting in pan is only about half of total. It is fairly easy procedure. Use cheapo fluid for flush and good fluid for what is staying in. Good luck.

I can't imagine that a flush will improve mileage, but if you want to do it the procedure is described in the FAQ's.
