Santa left a new JVC CD/Receiver under the tree this year. Luckily, Santa shops at Crutchfield.com, so he also left the din adapter and wiring harness.
I didn't know what I was going to find when I pulled out the existing unit - the previous owner had replaced the OEM with a Sony tape player/receiver, and I was concerned that the installer may have butchered the factory wiring harness. So I was pleasantly surprised when I found the exact same adapted harness behind the Sony, with the exact same plug to the unit. It seemed all I would have to do is plug it in, and turn it own. Nah. The speaker wiring on the Sony was reversed, left to right and vice versa. So rather than just swapping the speaker wires, I decided to take the extra half hour and crimp up the new harness.
The JVC unit has IPOD capability built in, just plug the IPOD cable in the back, and get the music, controls, and readouts on the unit. With the unit mounted in the top slot, and after removing the glove box, and passenger kick panel, and moving the heater control console out of the way, I found I could snake the IPOD cable down behind all the existing wire, and through a large opening in the top of the lower storage area, where I can push it in and out of the way if not in use. Took a little time and patience, but no cutting or hole punching.
Now for speakers. I just have the two door mounted in the front, some vintage Boston Acoustics. One has very weak output, the other has no bass response whatsoever. So I'm in the market, and looking for recommendations on replacement 4 inchers.
While I am it, I'm thinking of installing rears, in the deck, and I'm adverse to cutting metal, so I'm looking for recommendations for something that will bolt right in to the existing openings. I looked on Crutchfield's website, and everything they list for the car's rear deck all say "modified fit", whatever that means.
I'm not looking to energize the neighborhood with my sounds, just some decent bass response from the rears, and clear tweets and mids from the front.
Suggestions welcome.

Thanks for the replies. Circuit City is having a buy one pair, 1/2 price on the second pair this weekend, so I think I'll wander over there today.
I think I might get lucky with the front doors. When the PO did the previous upgrade, he put in 4" Bostons, and it looks like I can just slip in new speakers of the same size. I'm not sure what the OEM grille looked like, but the grilles in place have mounting holes that line up with the mounting ears on the Bostons.
I'm still ruminating over the rear speakers. I really don't want to cut if I don't have to - haven't had a chance to look at the exising cutouts in the rear deck - some other archive threads seem to suggest that a 4x6 will fit right in. Time to take some measurements.
I looked at the Infinity speakers - they seem to be a little pricey, more than I want to spend. Right now, I'm leaning toward some $50 Pioneers - TSG1041R - for the fronts.

Pioneers sound great. Fit pretty well too. I did some comparison on speakers two years ago and found the nicer Pioneers were the equal of much more expensive speakers. Of course they were equal to my ears, that doesn't mean everyone would agree. Sound is as subjective as anything, I suppose.

I recently installed Polk Audio 6.5" in the rear deck, and they sound fantastic! I did cut metal (not hard, use saber saw with fine metal blade), or if you mount closer to the rear seat belt mounts, little or no metal cutting will be needed. You can check this from inside the trunk.

I don't think you could expect much in the way of any bass from any 4 incher, but I could be wrong. I still have the stockers in the Brick but I just put a pair of 4" Kenwood KFC-1061S 3-Way speakers in my motorcycle and was pleasantly surprised at the sound quality.

I used Infinity Kappa in mine 6 1/2" in the rear deck and 5 1/4" on the front doors. The front door speakers were mounted on the existing Volvo speaker mounts in my 93 so they stick out a bit but do not interfere with the windows. They sound great and are probably as big as you can expect to be powered by the standard radio/CD head unit. I thought about 6x9" on the rear deck but you would either need spacers or cut metal to make them fit.
I am about to do a different install in my daughters 91 4" Infinity Reference in the front doors and 3 1/2" Infinity Reference in the rear doors. Look at Jorrell's install of the 3 1/2" at http://www.brickboard.com/RWD/index.htm?id=1201200
These should fit in existing Volvo speaker housings.

BoxVolvo:
That thread also contains a recommendation for front speakers... they work great as well. On note though, don't use the old female spade lug connectors on the wiring, they are worn out and the male spades on the new speaker are thinner... crimp on the new ones that come with the speakers.

Jorrell - thanks for the tip about the connectors.
No joy at Circuit City - one guy working in the car audio department, ten people lined up. So I came home, did some more surfing, and located some Eclipse 4 inch speakers for the front at Costco for $50. Costco doesn't put model numbers on their website, but they look suspiciously like the Eclipse SE8245 available at Crutchfield for 90 bucks. Hmmm.
Anybody have any experience with Eclipse? I'm a little out of my element here, the last time I went shopping for speakers, they were for the 8 track in my 68 Camaro.

I have Eclipse's in one my 240s and they sound nice (a little bright but unless you want to drop 2-300 they are probably your best bet). BUT... (there is always a but...) watch the depth. You only have 2" of depth to work with and you do NOT want to use the Eclipse grill -- keep the Volvo grill because it gives you another 1/4" or so.

Thanks for the input - turns out that the Costco deal on the Eclipse speakers was vaporware, so I wound up buying Pioneers.
The 4 inch Pioneers popped right in to the door space where the old Bostons were - holes lined up, and the existing grill (which I think was an aftermarket grill added when the PO did the previous upgrade) fit perfectly. Only adaptation was to crimp the Pioneer connectors to the existing wires. Sound quality is pretty good - excellent horns, and a surprising bass response.
Circuit City was having a 50% off a second set of speakers, so I went for the 4x6 Pioneers for the rear deck. The 4x6s fit well within the rectangular openings on the sides of the metal frame, so no cutting necessary. That's a project for this weekend. Right now the working plan is bolt the speakers up to the rear deck from underneath, then cover the entire back deck with acoustic cloth. I'm thinking of insulating the speaker mounts with a rubber washer, 1/2 inch or so, to isolate the speaker from the deck in an attempt to cut down vibration. Guidance on this aspect is welcome.
