1987 245 5sp head gasket? 200

Greetings:
Almost exactly 1 yr aqo I had a bad headgasket. Sudden loss of power, sudden cloud of blue smoke, gradually got to point where I had to pull over and be towed. Not sure I could do the job, I had local reputable indy shop (mostly American but I've sen everything there)do the job. I provided a rebuilt head, elring OEM gasket, new bolts, etc. This afternoon same thing. I was going up hill or I might have made it home.Towed it home. Moisture under no. one cylinder at front (observed for a few weeks) no apparent loss of coolant, no milky oil (added 3/4 quart 2 days ago)some slight oil film on top of vcover - only noticeable because car looks junky but I wipe engine down often. I'm thinking of trying one of those head gasket leak sealers as temp. fix -you have to drain and fill w/water first, then use and replace w/anti-freeze. Volvo anti-freeze currently in unit.Comments?

bmwjohn in indy/avon
p.s. anybody work on volvo in this area, preferably at home? I'm not taking it back to the previous place. Thanks.

    1987 245 5sp head gasket? 200 1977

May this find you well John! it is an excerpt from a previous post of mine:

I used a product like that when I noticed oil in my coolant in my 1977 6 Cylinder engine before I had a chance to change it. In any other situation I would have never considered using such a product. It worked OK I guess, but the leak was not substantial yet, just a residue that covered expansion tank.

Darryl, as I said, my situation was unique. I figured that the leak was not critical, but all I needed was for something to let go. The engine I had was junk, because repair would have been expensive (The Cams had very deep grooves) and I wanted no part of a defective design. Your engine has a very nice design, It was well thought out and improved over the years. I'm sure that many here on this forum (if they were in your place) including myself, would replace the headgasket without question as I have seen engines like yours melt away from driving with a bad gasket.

That stop leak product ran about $25, FCP has a head kit for just $10 more. I spent alot of time flushing (out the old coolant) and cleaning (making sure there is no coolant) and filling (the engine with water) and running (for an hour) and waiting (24 Hours) for that engine to get that stopleak to work.

I will leave the decision to you. Keep in mind I (we) should be able to instruct you fairly decently whatever you decide.

    Good Luck!!! and Happy Holidays!!!
