one more rear brake pad question 200 1987

just put in new rear brake pads for my first time with some help from this board, but I ran into another (I think) problem. On one side, the rotor doesn't sit evenly spaced between the two pads. In fact, it is far enough towards one pad that it there was barely enough space to get the new pad in there, even though the pad and piston are pushed flush with the caliper. So basically, with the new pads installed, the rotor rubs continuously against this one pad. It seems that this problem might work itself out if I just drive and let the new pad wear to lesser thickness, but would that be foolish/cause overheating?? Are there other options, like somehow sanding down the new pad slightly so it fits without rubbing? Thanks,

Colin

Maybe the rotor isn't sitting all the way onto the axle. Eg. Something is caught between the rotor and the plate that holds the lug bolts and is shimming it off center?

You'd need to pull the rotor to look and rear rotors are often hard to remove because of parking brake pad interference.

Jack that wheel back up and try to turn the wheel by hand. If it turns freely but you still hear rubbing, it is probably OK.
It is possible that a wheel bearing is going which is causing the offset. I would find a reputable Volvo mechanic and have him inspect it.
Verify that the caliper is centered over the rotor and none of the bolts are loose.

I am able to turn it by hand, although it is noticeably more difficult to turn than the other rear wheel. The caliper looks to be properly centered, no bolts loose. I'm beginning to think the problem will fix itself as I drive on it, I just wanted to make sure that wasn't a dumb idea.

I don't understand L, how could this be? Are you sure that this is the case? Have you seated the pads by pushing the brake pedal? I recall that you drift out the pins and retract the piston then remove and reinstall new pads. Was this what you did?
The pads are always in contact with the rotor, it is not like a bicycle where the pads retract after braking. If the hub is binding due to the brakes, the situation is unacceptable.

A picture says a thousand words, maybe you could take some and post back.

I installed the pads as you describe, following the bentley and haynes manuals. The problem was that one of the pads I could barely fit in because there was not enough space between the caliper and the rotor for the pad to slide in easily. The pad is in there now, it just rubs against the rotor more than it seems it should.
(This is my first time posting a photo, so I apologize if it didn't work)

the photo shows the new pads installed, but you can see how the pad on the right has no extra space between it and the caliper, in contrast to the pad on the left.

Is the right pad the same thickness as the left? Look at that image you posted. Maybe an illusion, maybe not. Also, were anti-squeal shims installed? Same number and thickness, etc. Anyway, when I worry about this on mine after unjacking the car I put the car in neutral on a flat and push the car back with one foot out the door. I figure that's a test for brake drag.

That seems OK to me. Have you pumped up the pedal? I think it should be fine, If you did what you said, and just put new pads there should be no problem.
