Crane Ignition + IPD bypass diode = works??? 120-130

My 67 220 had a Crane/Allison ignition and a severed armored cable. I have been slowly upgrading it for a D-jet conversion, and I swapped a bosch blue coil in back when I swapped a B20E into the wagon last Thanksgiving. The wagon is awaiting me having some spare time and cash, and since I got my 68 130, I've done very little to the 220 and probably will not until spring.

As I understand it, the crane unit will not work on a D-jet car, so I've decided to remove that unit from the wagon and install it in the sedan. To save time, I'm just going to swap in my pre-setup B18 (Bosch 003) distributor.

Here's my problem. I can't find the 67's original cabled coil, and I really do not want to cut into the cable on the 68. Plus after looking at that mess of wires on the ignition switch, I'm not sure I want to deal with swapping that switch out anyway. Added to that is that the switch in the 68 seems to be the style where you have to drill out a pin to remove the key tumbler. So getting the switch out will not be easy...

So,. I thought there was an easy solution... IPD has a coil bypass diode kit for $10.00 that removes the need to cut the armored cable. However, after searching their site, I found the kit listed under the pertronix ignition and there is no explanation of whether the kit works with the crane system. ...hardly surprising, it's hard to find info on the IPD site since they re-organized it.

Anyway... has anyone used one of these bypass kits with a crane/allison electronic unit?

Does anyone have any ignition recommendations for the coil (aside from buying a new Bosch blue coil and cutting the old coil off?

I'd like to save at least one original ignition setup from these two cars.

Thanks as always

Crane Ignition + IPD bypass diode = works??? Of course! 120-130

    RJ;

D-Jetronic is the Injection system...Crane, Pertronix, are IGN systems so I'll certainly second Phil's comment that there is NO reason the two won't play together...there is no interaction other than that they are under the same hood and powered by the same E-system.

...and speaking of which, the diode cable has TWO power diodes set up to route power from two sources to the load...properly called an "OR"ing circuit (because one OR the other source powers the load). Power from terminal 50 (Solenoid/Starter, powered ONLY during cranking,), OR terminal 54 (IGN power, but which is shut OFF during cranking for load shedding).

I'm in the process of finishing up a detailed write-up on the IGN switch, armored cable, and their function, including adding an ORing cable to power electronic IGN modules...I'll see if I can accelerate this a bit...see: http://www.sw-em.com/Volvo%20Ignition%20from%20Scratch.htm#Vintage%20Volvo%20Ignition%20system%20and%20the%20Armored%20Cable

    Cheers

Nice, seems the car's got the week off while I await the arrival of this part.
See my other thread about my present problem.

The Crane works fine on a D-jet car (why not?).

The diode harness works fine with the Crane.

I'm running the Crane system on my B20E with the HS6's without any problem ... have the vacuum retard removed and am running the IPD diode line ... no problems with it at all.

Well, I had asked earlier about D-jetting my 220 and someone in here told me that a Pertronix will work, while a Crane/Allison would not.

It probably referred to the vacuum retard-type distributor that was originally on the B20E. That has those lower ignition contacts that fit into the side of the distributor and is quite different from the Bosch 003 distributor that had the allison/crane unit.

The IPD diode kit should allow you to run a different coil than stock without cutting into the armored cable. It essentially gives you power to your coil when when the car is cranking. I believe that the diode simply stops power from going back to the starter after cranking is over.

      Hello,

If you have a starter with the updated starter solenoid, you do not need a diode at all.

You can use the terminal that has a diode built into the solenoid.

Which starter is this? Is it the smaller later version from the 700 series? I believe they are a direct swap and spin a little faster too.

          Hello,

The later style smaller starter do have this terminal as well.

You can use those high torque starters on B18/B20/B30 but you have to get new metric bolts and I usually have to open the bellhousing holes a little to get the new bolts in.
