Spin flange vs solid flange perference? 200

Certainly nobody could complain about a lack of parts interchangeability with the 240. One area that Volvo did flip flop back and forth was the was the spin and solid flanges on the downpipe and converter. I changed out my brother in laws spin type converter yesterday and actually perfered it over the solid type. If I ever had to replace both the downpipe and converter think I would go with this style. Just curious to what others perfer and think the reason for Volvo having both styles.

Spin flange vs solid flange perference? 200

I think spin flange can leak and fail more easily . My walker converter failed just after 4-5 months at that point . The metal lip which is needed in this case developed a crack where it bends at right angle. It it had been welded on both sides or even at the rear side of flange it would not have failed. There is no resistence for the cat to rotate around its axis except the friction provided at both the ends, this can also contibute to more stress to the lip.

It makes the joint with header flange weak . If the lip fails you can take out the converter without even removing the flange .
