intermittent cruise control . . . where should I look first? 700 1990

My cruise control works, sometimes, no real rhyme or reason to when it does and when it does not work. Sometimes I think there may be a correlation to when the car has been running for a while and is warmed up, that it seems more likely to work, but I've hardly confirmed this.

What are the likely culprits for intermittent cruise control? I'm guessing the parts on the steering column . . . I haven't figured out where the rest of the system is but can work on that -

You didn't mention whether your car (740?) has a manual transmission...I would start by checking the vacuum hoses on the pedals (brake pedal if AT, brake and clutch if MT) - the cruise on my 740 worked intermittently until I cut about 1/2" off the end of the vacuum tube on the clutch switch and then reseated the tube. The end had stiffened and stretched and wasn't making a good seal. Also, if the car has a manual trans, try pulling the clutch pedal towards you (left foot under the pedal) to see if the cruise engages - if yes, it indicates a worn or out of adjustment clutch cruise switch (or clutch pedal not returning fully). Check all the cruise vacuum lines for small holes/slits/leaks.

It is a manual transmission, so I'll look there and try your suggestions. A friend borrowed my car a year ago and thought there was some connection to playing with the clutch pedal and getting the cruise control to work, and your experience seems to suggest there may be something to that -

I'll be very happy if it's just an issue of some hoses and not in the electronics/wiring.

Well that was easy fix - it just needed an adjustment on the clutch switch. works like a champ now. The clutch linkage has lots of slop in it from years of use, so when the clutch is out all the way, the pedal isn't. Thanks!!
