underbody rust prevention 200 1989

Hi,

I've been spending a few days removing rust from the wagon and trying POR-15. Trying to keep this wagon for dying of rust. But my next though is what about the underbody? What do people do? I'm thinking about putting it up on jack stands and loosening the peeling coating and cleaning with a wire brush. Would people go so far as to clean with a degreaser then acid clean and finally a rust preventative paint? Or how about just spraying some sort of tenacious tar gunk? I have never done this sort of thing so I'm really in the dark on the subject. There is a really nice think coating of something on 99% under, but there are some spots that are no longer protected and are showing rust..

Also what do people think of the different rust treatments/services out there; such as Crown or ???

Thanks!

Yaleh.

Yikes!!! Reminds me of my first 240!!!! The underside rotted right out! I would want to think of how long it would take you to peel that black coating off. I "Krown" my 240 sedan every fall and although it has only seen two Canadian winters it's holding up just fine. It's worth the money that's for sure.

    Cheers,
    Max

Waxoyl is what all the landrover fans use on there vehicles. My father used to use it in the U.K on his mini's and swore by it.

Crown or Rust Check (same thing) are great products as they have a tendancy to creap around the metal everywhere. Much better than oil spray rustproofing.

I cleaned off the loose undercoating, sprayed some uncarriage undercoating, and then rust-check after all is dry. Might be better ways, but mine was easy, cheap, quick, and respectably effective.

In addition to POR 15 I use undercoating made by 3M. Walmart sells it for 5.99 a can. POR 15 and then a couple of coats of the 3M undercoating makes for some pretty durable protection. I find that POR 15 can take some serious time and effort to do a good job on the underbody. A less but not as durable option is to wire brush the rust off and then spray with some zinc rich primer and undercoating or just straight undercoating.

      Thanks Yama,

So regarding POR15; are you doing the whole prep thing? Marine clean, metal prep, then por? Are you using the chasis paint or just the metallic one?? If you used the marine clean, did it adversely affect the existing undercoating? Is it strong emough to eat into the factory undercoating?

Zinc rich primer eh? I assume that is better at protecting metal from rust than straight primer?

I have to admit I'm less than thrilled at the idea of working with all this stuff upside down and in close quarters :\

I did alot of POR 15 doing complete prep with marine clean and metal ready lying on my back on my 3 240's prior to getting a lift. Not all that fun. The marine clean is a good degreaser but I would scrap the undercoating around the rust area off manually first with a nylon tool. You don't want to sand the undercoating into the metal has that will reduce adhesion. A dremel with a sanding wheel also saves time over manual sanding. I mostly use the original semi gloss black POR 15 followed by a coat of the 3M undercoating. They have a silver one with metal particles that is suppose to add some thickness. BTW the POR works great with fiberglass mesh for small holes. Wear safety glasses. I got one tiny drop in my eye once and that was enough to never want it to happen again.

So have you found the POR15 to hold up well? Had rust come back on you? I guess I really wonder how good this stuff is; how long it lasts..

          Thanks!

I've used it alot and if the surface is prepared properely it is very durable. If you put it on a oily surface it will eventually peel off. I've use it on sandblasted control arms and trailing arms and after 2 years its still good whereas most regular paint would wear off. Its pretty close to being as hard as powder coat.
