Overdrive fix - spring tension in relay 700 1989

Hi all

I thought I'd share the success I have had with fixing an intermittent OD problem.

Before shelling out some (little) cash for a new OD relay, I dismantled the relay to have a look inside to see if broken solder was at fault, a la the FAQ.

The little circuit board looked fine with good solder joints, so I thought I'd bend the tab holding one end of the relay spring to increase the tension of the spring to see if the problem could be solved that way.

I also sprayed some Deoxit to clean the switch contact areas.

Well, the OD is seemingly good as new. No more intermittent OD light flashing, and the OD button on the autoshift lever works in a consistent manner.

All good!

Lucast

    Lucast,

If that took car of it, looks like you took the right steps to fix a dirty contact. It usually is fine cracks in the solder, though. Hard to see them. You should be prepared for the possibility that the solder may have flexed some when you took the relay apart, and is now making better contact. If so, it may fail again.

    Good going.

I always relate those little successes to how much beer I can buy with the money saved.

    So, let's see..... (1) OD relay = ? Fosters ????

      Beer money 700 1989

      Hi Chris,

      Nice system you have there!
If something terrible happens and you have to spring for big bucks for parts,
do you go on the wagon for a few months? How does that work in Georgia,
      can't switch to water anymore~!
      :-)

      Bill

Bite your tongue! It's just like the federal gov - there's always money for beer (usually cheap beer) - you just have to "redirect" it from another fund.

I have to hurry and finish this post before the electric power gets shut off.

You're right though. We ARE running out of water. I'll soon be taking "Old Milwaukee" beer baths.
