Like the subject says I have a brief pop (like a small backfire) upon starting my car which is an '85 244 M46 with 196k miles. The sound seems to come from the rear and it starts right up after the pop. I recently had the 2 mufflers, the pipe that joins them, and the exhaust pipe replaced. It only pops upon starting when the engine is cold...I'm just now wondering if it's the exhaust manifold gasket?
Any thoughts out there?

    Of all the bricks that we have owned, only our '90 GL with a Regina ignition system did that. I heard it all the time, but the shop never observed it.

    One thing that I noticed on the couple of times I did some troubleshooting on one of the car's ignition system is that there is one spark as soon as you turn the key on.

    Perhaps this is the cause of the pop.
