WORK IN PROGRESS banjo nut on fuel filter won't budge - TIPS? 200

hello,

i just changed mine out today.

superb, experienced advice from others.

my few syllables: be sure to tighten those bolts tighter than you think.

both ends leaked after i thought they were tightened.

check the car when running and look for any droplets forming. keep on tightening until they stop leaking.

be sure to have the plastic hoses aligned properly and not too bent at an angle.

NOTE: be sure to have good ventilation.

regards,

WORK IN PROGRESS banjo nut on fuel filter won't budge - TIPS? 200

hi there,

well, just an update...i actually ended up getting it off with a socket 18mm and an open ended wrench.

then, the real fun began...reconnected easy and set-up again, but didn't tighten it enough and ended up with gas spraying out...not very fun.

took it off again - i removed both fuel line ends, and re-tighted.

this time, it started leaking from where the fuel pump connects to the filter.

finally cleaned it up - super tightened squeezing to open end wrenches in one hand - it works, and it appears like all is well.

next time, i think i will buck up and have someone else do it...having said that, now that i've done all the leg work it would probably be easier next time.

cheers.

I like the washers that have a rubber seal on the washer, they seem to seal much easier for me. Dan

IF you let someone else do it ,,,,WILL THEY USE NEW WASHERS&GET IT TIGHT ENOUGH TO NOT HAVE A GAS LEAK?????
I don't like this setup&under all the 240/740 I;ve seen dissolved undercoating there from fine sprays that you can only see w/the sun on the other side of the car so it back lights it.
my ford van never leaked like this.

I find that using an impact is the easiest.

I ruined a brand new filter one time trying to hold the filter side of the connection with a wrench on the formed hex; aluminum is too soft (and thin in this case) to withstand any real grip.

I now use a very large pair of adjustable pliers to hold the filter on the rolled lip at the end of the filter.

Be careful that fuel does not siphon out of the supply side once you remove the the hose from the pump. Disconnecting there and on the filter at the outlet side will enable you to move the project to a more suitable workspace than the underside of the car.

Fuel filter changing can be difficult and even dangerous.

The last one I did I used and electric impact driver, very easy. I have also used 2 open end wrenches one on the filter and one on the bango nut. Or try a vise-grip wrench on the filter and an open end on the bango nut. Arrange the wrenches so they are close together and you can squeeze them together wit your hand to loosen the nut. This gives you a lot more leverage and has worked well for me. Dan

I'd say button it up and have a mechanic change it. From personal experience and reading a number of posts it seems like changing the filter ends up causing more problems than it is worth. I've read having an air gun is the best way. And maybe someone can give me some info on when I did mine, I found a small copper ball after Disassembled mine, some kind of back flow preventer? It was from the outlet side. Good luck just the same!
