Just wondered because it seems so.... it isn't the MOST important thing to post about but I am going to start feeling really weird if I am the only one here.
Thanks.

ok I'll blow her cover- Brickboard forum user buboes is a woman, and a competent Volvo tech as well. Here is buboes rebuilding her overdrive:

And one of her relaxing by her '79 245:

She just picked up a '61 Amazon as well.
Heh. She'll probably kill me for this...

Howdy!
Haha, true, youre the minority... but unfortunately thats the same for ANY car board I've visited. :( Im still surprised ANY women like these old Volvos! My friend and I usually joke about which car scares the ladies away more, my 240 or his ancient, crusty Toyota. We love our cars but they're like chick magnets stuck in reverse polarity sometimes. :P Glad to have more of the fairer folk around regardless!

Janet posts here from time to time.
She has the "younger cousin" of my '80 245. Her '80 245 has about half as many miles as mine does, which is why it's "younger."
There are a handful of other women I've seen post here over the years. You aren't the only one!

A year or so back, A person "Chris" was asking some car ssues. We went back and forth trying to get it resolved...I looked in their profile and found they were local. I told Chris to come over the house and I can look at the car and see what I can do. Chris was a very young girl...knocked me over. I was pleasantly surprised that she was a hands on car owner.
Throttle body cleaning and a used Fuel pump regulator ( i had laying around) and her car finally passed inspection.
So you may be a minority but we all respect a hands on volvo owner. your Sex is irrelevant

Ooh! Ooh! *raises hand* I'm a girl and I'm here too!
Yeah, we're definitely the minority here (not exactly surprising), and even more the minority in real life. I don't think any of my female friends know how to do more than check oil, and I'm sure a few can't even do that. Then again, I suspect thats the case for most of my male friends as well.
My absolute devotion to a single type of car (and an old one at that) seems to be a bit of an oddity among my friends as well. I think I might need some new friends. :)

Hey there! Nice to know you are here too.
I am no mechanical engineer so don't look down your nose at me.
I did pack a 14 ton forklift to go on a container overseas this summer but I could not tell you anything about a car engine. :(
Trying to learn.

Heidi,
You may be a rarity participating on this forum, and even more so if you actually work on your own 240.
My wife drives a 245, my daughter a 240. They do go to club meetings and Volvo shows. Anything Volvo as long as it doesn't involve tools or getting dirty. My son and I are the ones who keep them maintained and updated. But it does help to have five 240s at the house.
Easy to find parts when most everything interchanges.
And insurance? Registration? I can give you lots of reasons why we are a Volvo family. Guys and gals.
Welcome to the forum and enjoy the entire Volvo experience.

I am actually hoping to learn some basic maintenance of my car. My mechanic says he will teach me.
I don't mind getting my hands dirty. I will wear gloves and get the occasional manicure.
Best!

Welcome to the Brick Board!! This is the best Volvo site on the Web all the knowledge you need to keep a 240 on the road.
Welcome! Welcome! Welcome! Live Long and Prosper

Heide Hi, Heidi Ho,
I can tell you this.
During the X-mas break from school, when my daughter is doing mostly nothing, we take the seats out of the 240's (easy) strip off the seat bottoms and wash them. Makes for a nice father/daughter project.
In addiition, I get my daughter to help me with transmission flushes (she keeps an eye on me) and other miscellaneous small repair/replacement projects.
Sure beats painting.
I'll try to get her to give you a pep talk when she's home from school

How exactly do you strip off the seat bottoms and replace them?
I am actually contemplating having both front seats recovered. Gasp....the foam in the driver side is a little tough on one side and there is the beginning of rot on the passenger side.
The only thing I don't like is I cannot match the fabric exactly if I do this.
I have gotten an EXCELLENT price on this so I feel okay with this otherwise.
It would be more expensive for me to buy the parts and do it myself then let this guy do it who looked at it!
I know I know, my hands are not on the project but until I live in the country I am not going to have the time and the place to do too much hands on.
Please don't lose respect!

Especially on college faculties Bob. I get the impression a lot of people look down on those who do their own mechanical work. That seems silly, to me.

Well, I admit, I kind of look down on people who can't do their own.

Laughed my tea out my nose there! Thanks! :-)
Unfortunately, women are in the minority here by what seems to be a sizable margin... being a maintenance/repair forum. Not sure what causes it, nature or nurture, but for some reason this tends to be more of a "guy" hobby. Unfortunate. Maybe that'll change as that line in the sand becomes more and more blurry.
Though lots of women do LOVE these cars. My girlfriend and I seem to rescue dogs, cats, fish, and Volvo's! She absolutely loves the 240. Since we got the last 240, she hasn't talked much about wanting a Subaru!

Haha! I quickly added that qualifying statement because I have a friend who INSISTS this car choice is an odd one.
I think it is because I have loved it since I was a child. I dreamed that my parents would be Volvo drivers but instead we were a family of Chevys and Fords. Sorry it just didn't work for me. I am working on reliving my childhood again, the way I wanted to be driven!

It is a car forum, mostly old crusty cars at that. Grease, blood, tools, sweat, and hazardous chemicals - What did you expect?
I can only think of two other women that frequent the RWD - i.e. "oldies" - section of the forum.
While there are other Volvo forums out there, unless you want make your exhaust louder or lower the car to the ground or put it on bigger rims or turbocharge it, this is probably the best suited to your needs.

Haha- I can just see it now: a speedster Volvo with fat tires and big rims. Not for me, thanks.
I seriously just wondered. I really couldn't care less, male or female. I wondered if there were some women out there who were as crazy for 240s as I am or if there is something wildly wrong with me? ;)

No, you are fine, you are simply one of the rare people on the face of the Earth that know how to appreciate the safety and simplicity of service on a vehicle, not to mention a great appreciation for the "brick" appearance.
My Wife, Julia, has posted a very few times on the BB, but she is a "Volvo saved my life" club member. She helps me out a great deal in the garage whether I'm doing regular brick maintenance (oil change, spark arrestor, plugs, brake pads....) and even on the big stuff like a 92 245 resto-mod... installing the drivetrain, interior, and body panels. Yes, the 92 245 was her idea, and I can guarantee you that it now handles nothing like a stock brick!
Why? Simple, our 89 244 at 99K miles gave it's life to save hers:

She did not walk away after the 55MPH impact, but She did survive and fully recovered from a broken neck (hangman's fracture) after six months. This injury is normally seen as a fatal event, and if it occurs in a car accident, the patient's legs are normally crushed and must be amputated. In Julia's case, she had a dime sized bruise on her left knee... sure beats amputation, let alone death, eh?
In her case, and in mine for that matter, I hope it is obvious that Volvo is the only way to go. Our 92 245 resto-mod project was all about avoiding accidents, so we wound up with a wagon that sits an inch lower, has every last piece of suspension upgrade possible, and has a few extra pony's under the hood. Yes, even fat sticky tires that barely fit. The result is a Volvo that we both love to drive as we know what it can do, what it can avoid, and if we can't (on an off chance), the base design of the Volvo will protect us to a great extent.
Here is a pic of the Julia "driven" 92 245 design:

In other words, there are a lot of reasons for women being on the BB, this is only one, but to be honest with you, all BB members strive for the same thing, a nice, safe reliable ride that will stand up to the impossible when needed!

Listen, Julia is one lucky lady. Obviously the car story is evidence, but she has a husband that is looking out for her and loves 240s(245)! Wow. Lucky girl.
I loved the pictures.
I am striving for all that you mentioned above when I drive my car. I also truly believe that I look super cool and everyone is jealous.

"I also truly believe that I look super cool and everyone is jealous."
Well, that's what I always think whenever I see a female driving a 240... I always want to chase them down and talk to them so I can help them make it look nicer and run better because usually it's a hand me down that looks run down... Haha, but I never do.

Hola Hiedi,
Sounds like you haven't checked out the URL in Rhaire's post above.
Here's the link to "VolvoGirl".
Please check it out and let us know your reaction.

does that link within her lovely memoir go straight to a site that hooks you up with young Russian girls?
Let me know.

Sorry, couldn't resist the Memorex thing. Remember those ads for casette tapes?
Some years back I read a BB post about Lee Holman's tangle with Volvo Cars North America (VCNA) about her use of the word "Volvo" in her URL. She lost, and so to find her now needs a new address.
That site seems to be one where anyone can set up a domain for anything.
Is the correct spelling of your screen name ¡Hola! ?

Bob

I see what you mean. That wasn't what I thought you'd find.
That Swedishbricks link must be old, with the VolvoGirl link abandoned, and now something completely different.
I thinl she used to have someting like a mini Brickboard, and often contributed tech articles to the IPD news letter. I now recall something from 2 or 3 years ago where she was cutting back on the online stuff.
In any case, I think her previous Volvo involvement speaks (indirectly) to your original question.

No, you are not. There are a number of women who frequent the Brickboard RWD Forum. However, as you might expect (and most likely have observed) you in the minority.
Personally I see it as a non-issue... it's all about the cars (grin).

hola!,
I don't own one yet, but I'm looking. For what it's worth my wife is a big fan of the 240 and she already told me that she will be taking it a LOT.
Aren't you the one who bought the one on ebay for $9K. Awesome car!

Yes I am the one who bought that car. Despite the initial commentary from those who thought I spent too much, I LOVE HER!
She is great. I have to leave her soon tomorrow for FIVE weeks.
I can't wait to take my son for a ride in her. I told him it is going to be his car one day.
I hope he likes her!
