instrument cluster wowes 200 1990

I had an intermittant failure of all gauges on my dash. Took it out, cleaned and tightened the plug-in connections (I suspect the red wire was the culprit).
When I re-assembled things, i crossed the 2 wires for the speedo. I then changed it to the way it is supposed to be.

Now the speedo works, but the odometer has stopped. The up shift light (Manual Trannie) blinks now and agiain.

Any ideas what I did (what I fried) or how to fix?

Thanks.

I have been absent for quite awhile.....I bought a TR6 this spring. Not nearly as reliable...but a lot more fun to drive......

I would bet you lost the little gear. Either Cleanflametrap or Daveshan have a procedure posted. Suggest getting the gear from Odometergears. They have a header advert on the Brickboard. Tough little dudes that drop right in.

I would bet the source of your first problem was the fuse-able link that little flimsy jumper over the speedo. Those contacts get corroded and do not make good contact after a while. All of the idiot lights will not work is the symptom. I forget the value of the fuse, but I ended up making a new jumper out of a small fuse and two small lugs. Not a problem since then. Someone posted the fuse rating.

    Good Luck,

    PT

      WOW...thanks.

I really think t was a short....i was able to get things to work giggling the the big plug that has the red wire from the alternator in it.

Would a bad gear in the speedo make for intermittant flashing of the up-shift light?

A bad gear in the Speedo will make the odometer not work, that's it as far I know about.

With the upshift light double check all your grounds just to make sure one of them is not loose. Most of them are on the center console, but there may be others up in there.

If you can jiggle the connector and change the results that points to loose connections on the harness side connector and or badly corroded or worn contacts on the back of the cluster. Unless you got a wire pinched at some point I would doubt a short. Time for an old Elect Tech trick, find a good Pink Pearl Eraser and give all those pins on the back of the cluster a good buffing to raise a shine. Do not use any hard abrasive on the pins! You do not want to scratch up the pin, once the copper under the AU is exposed the corrosion will really take off. The gold or nickel used the plate the pins was ment to be a barrier to protect the copper. What you gain in the short run will bite you harder in the long run if you scrape in too far.

On the connector side look for any pushed out pins, and for deformed or opened up contacts. You can take a small tipped pair of pliers or a jewelers screwdriver and close up the contacts just a bit. Getting carried away will result in a crushed pin and that's no fun.

You may want to consider a donor PCB off another cluster or splicing in a new connector, depending what you figure out during your trouble shooting. The PCB is not hard to do, just a lot of small screws and take your time. The Harness side would be a pain in the buttocks.

        Good Luck,

        PT

I show some details on repairing the Odometer on my webpage:
          http://joseph.a.pulkowski.googlepages.com/volvoindex.html

If you replace the gear, make sure you blow out the Odometer gears with air or a spary can of computer cleaning dry air.

If the some displays are working after the repair , I would agree with looking for a used one, they aren't all that expensive.

Thanks for all of the help.

Idid re-bend allof the pin connections...that a nd a bit of contact grease for good measure. I hate taking it apart agin....but I guess Ihave to to get to the gear.

When I can get to it (maybe this weekend), I will let you all know what I find~
