Removing the rear wheel bearings .....????

I have a 1967 Volvo 122S and I am trying to install rear wheel bearings. The drum assembly is already off but I cannot get the bearing out of the race and off the axle. Is there a special trick to this? There doesn't appear to be enough room to grab the bearing with a puller.

Hello,

If you are trying to pull the axle out of the rear end, use the drum as a slide hammer by removing the keyway from the drum or axle and with the backing plate removed, slide the drum onto the axle, screw the axle nut on at least 3 full turns and then slide the drum towards the nut several times.

Pull easily at first and if you have to use more force do so with caution.

If you then want to remove the bearing, you will need a press to get it off.

DO NOT USE A PRESS TO INSTALL THE NEW BEARING!!

All you need is to slide on the bearing MAKING SURE YOU HAVE THE BEARING FACING THE CORRECT DIRECTION, and then tap the flat side of the inner end of the axle on something softer than the axle while pressing the bearing on with your hand.

I use a hunk of aluminum to protect the end of the axle.

Not Volvo Specific but I whiz wheel the old ones off. (Small pnuematic grinder). Score the race enough to break it but not deep enough to grind teh axle. Then with a long Pipe, smack the new ones on.
