740 ac won't work

my 1991 sedan b230 auto 740 ac stopped working...I checked the FAQ, but did not see a possible solution.

the ac compressor does not come on - it sarted working sporatically, and now nothing. The local corner mechanic says its the blower switch ($600) - but, the blower continues to work at all 5 speeds. Could it possibly be a relay, or something electrical? Any thoughts on how to diagnose?

Possibly low on freon, that will cause "short cycling" which is fast on/off of thecompressor then as more freon leaks out it will stop completely. Bypassing the pressostat switch on the accumulator is a quick easy test to confirm. Pressure test with guage will confirm.
