question about oil squirters 200

I was under the impression that all 1993 and later b230's had the oil squirters. Recentley I saw some posts that stated that just the b230ft's got them and the b230's didn't. Does anyone for sure?

I do not know for sure.

1991 944SE turbo, too much plumbing in the way to see the bumps from the top.
1992 244, made in 9/1991, non-L. with bumps! Oil squirters?
1993 944 na L block with bumps.
1995 945 na L block with bumps.

Edit: stealthfti indicates 1990 and newer engines have the bumps. Squerters can be added. This possibly means the squirters did start with the L block.

Issued settled: I have 2 non-turbo '93 L-blocks, and they have the squirters! .... 200

I think that the question is now solved.

I have two non-turbo ('93 240) L-blocks (and labelled as such on their timing belt covers). And following the exterior features identifying the oil squirter engines (i.e., the "bumps" on the passenger side of the block) shown at the 'stealthfti' website that was cited in Hardknocks's post, my engines clearly show that they have the oil squirters.

So if you believe that website, then based on my sample of two ordinary (non-turbo, 240 or similar) L-block that are as early as 1993, any of them should be expected to have the oil squirters.

Regards,

Hi Ken,

The information I remember seeing on the NA was that even though they had the casting bumps the NA blocks still may not have the squirters installed. I've disassembled a 1993 b230ft and it did indeed have the squirters. I guess I would like to hear from someone who as actually had a 1993 b230 apart.

Fair enough, but .... 200

re: "...even though they had the casting bumps the NA blocks still may not have the squirters installed.... I guess I would like to hear from someone who as actually had a 1993 b230 apart...."

That's a reasonable skepticism. Can't really argue with that.

But I pose a counter-question to you (not having seen the insides of my car anyway):
With the casting bumps present, might not the tapped holes, inside, also be present? I don't know, I'm just asking.
And given that, wouldn't it be just as easy for Volvo to have provided squirters to cap those holes as it would have been to cap them with plugs? So why not go with squirters anyway?
But I confess that I'm prejudiced -- I lean toward believing (wishing?) that I do have the squirters simply because I have these two car with the engine in question, and I'd like to believe in anything that will contribute to their lasting a long time.

I wish I had the green manual, "New Car Features", for my '93 cars so I could give you a more authoritative answer (short of actually seeing the squirters with my own eyeballs) -- but I don't have that book.

I hope someone who has seen the insides does respond. Wishing good luck to us all!

Yama,

It has been my understanding that if the timing cover has the letter L on it then you have "oil squirters".

My car is a 93, 245, b230FD with the L.

Hope I'm right,

RonJ

I was always under the belief that only the latest 940 turbos got the system.

An old patron of this site, John Seargent, could verify this. He's torn into them before.
