1990 240DL turn signal/high beam wiring question 200 1990

Recently bought a turn signal/high beam stalk (from a pre-1990 240) to replace the one in my 1990 240DL and found that the connectors are quite different. The 1990 connector has blue, white, blue/red, and blue/yellow wires while the pre-1990 connector has brown, red, green, and yellow wires. Does anyone know the correct mappings so that I can change the connectors?

    I doubt anyone already "knows" the mappings between the wrong part and the right part - most would just go back for the right part. Or someone with time on their hands could look in their Haynes or Bentley to puzzle out the differences. Before I would do that, I'd want to know if you have a book on your car yourself. The little bit of research in your shop manual would help you learn more about your car anyhow.

      1990 240DL turn signal/high beam wiring question 200 1990

      why not? This forum is filled with posts about problems with the high beams. I bought the part on ebay knowing that it was from a prior year, however the seller claimed that the part would still work by changing the connectors. I'm sure someone has done this before...

        Came the dawn 200 1990

        This morning it came to me that you are referring to switch with Cruise Control wiring, while my no-help reply was addressing the "light control" wires (not all switches are wired for cruise control).

        After digging in the Bentley manual, I think your ebay seller was wrong. Those wire colors go to a round white 4-pin connector—which leads to the Cruise "brain". The problem is that the post '90 brain is not the same as the earlier one, and the terminal numbers don't match.

        In fact, in the early system, all 4 switch wires go to the brain terminals (2, 3, 11, and 12), while in your later system, only 3 switch wires go to the (later) brain terminals (1, 2, and 6), with the 4th wire (blue) going to fuse #12.

        I see no way you can use the earlier switch. The one you need is PN 3523536. OE price is $98 at Tasca Volvo, $119 at FCP Groton.

          Yes, sorry about the confusion. The connector is for the cc, and how unfortunate to hear that the part isn't compatible. I had an idea that something wasn't right as I haven't heard back from the seller about this.

          If I hear anything, I'll update here so maybe this won't happen to others. Thanks for taking the time to help... seems others here aren't as forgiving or welcoming to a first time poster.

            Cruise or headlight problem? 200 1990

            I'm sorry your fist visit here wasn't all you hoped for. Guess we all have good days and bad days. But don't let this thread discourage you. Maybe start a new one about why you think the switch needs replacing.

        1990 240DL turn signal/high beam wiring question 200 1990

        Perhaps someone has done this before. That in itself is a good bet given the wide audience of the internet. Perhaps you are right, but so far, your help has only come from someone who hasn't done it before, but has the time on his hands to do your research for you.

        1990 240DL turn signal/high beam wiring question 200 1990

        Some confusion here. The Bentley diagrams (Volvo copies) show a slight difference pre and post 1990, but your wire color descriptions don't match either one. FWIW, here's what the diagrams show:

        EARLY==> Terminal <==LATER

        Brown====>31b<======Brown
        Green=====>L<=======Blue/Green
        Yellow====>49a<======Yellow
        Blue======>R<=======Blue

        I have the early switch and one (presumably) later. While the terminals are configured slightly differently, they are in the same relationship to each other on both switches, as below:

        Viewed from the back, with the stalk pointing up:

        Alone at the upper left is 31b
        then
        L (left), 49a (power in), R (right) from left to right
