'New 240' 200 1992

Found a '92 240 Wagon yesterday with 126K miles. Interior is almost perfect with no dash cracks. Has the center armrest/cup holder. Map pockets on the doors are perfect. Body is great, and hood has been repainted due to oxidation, but the rest looks good.
Some very minor cosmetic things, and steering wheel is not pointing straight, but it drove well.

I gave the seller a down payment, and I hope to pick it up today.

I will be retiring my 740 wagon with 249,548 miles. I am trying to figure out what to do with it. I am considering gifting it to a friend whose son needs a car to get to work. I do not have room to keep it(there would be 4 if I did).

What would you do?

I gave away a 740 a few years ago to a nephew who was about to enter his senior year of high school. The car was really appreciated and got to be involved in some fun activity....I had a really good feeling about giving that car away, much better than if I had sold it to someone. About six months ago I saw an ad in a local paper for a 740 selling for $500 OBO. I was about to call the number when my wife said, "Let me see that." Yep, it was her sister in law. The nephew was selling the car. My wife wouldn't let me buy it back for $500.

How many miles did it have on it?
Was the person you gave it to someone who maintained it themself?
Did they ever come back to you looking for help on a repair?

Last night, the idea of giving it to a nephew came up. But he is 1000 miles away. Also, the car will need to be inspected, and I know all will pass, but I am worried about emmissions testing in Maryland.

The car had a little over 190,000 miles. I had done a ton of work on it over a five year period and had a sentimental attachment to it. I really wanted to see someone enjoy the car for a few more years. I knew the nephew and his family would not be coming to me with problems with the car. They were more live divorce in-laws than in-laws. So, I felt like I was safe there.

I have another one I am about to give away...an 850, and the advice I will give is that "if something goes wrong, take it here --- name of shop-- where they know how to fix a Volvo.

What would I do? Probably ditch the 740, but I don't much like 740's. Giving it to a friend with 250K is just like keeping it, if you do your own work. Your friend will bring it back for many visits. You may not want to keep giving the car all that attention with your new baby in the garage. Or you could put it up for adoption outside of your circle of family and friends.
