Swapping engine from '87 240 into '89 740?

Hi all,

I have an '87 240 that has been with me a long time and I love dearly, but she's a northern car with terminal cancer of the metal. Still runs and drives perfectly at 400k, but just not going to be with us much longer. There's an '89 740 non-turbo nearby with a blown engine and a good body.

Has anyone made this swap before? They're both M47 cars, so I can keep the one in the 740 with the cutout for the RPM/Crank sensor. My biggest concerns are ignition and fuel injection compatibility. The '87 240 is LH2.2. I'd imagine the '89 740 is 2.4--right? Is there any rhyme or reason to which 740s got Bosch ignition and which got Rex/Regina? How much does that distinction complicate thing? Are the motor mounts the same? How much destroying/rebuilding of wiring harnesses am I looking at here? Please forgive my ignorance, but I've never had a 740.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

    Swapping engine from '87 240 into '89 740?

    hello
the motor is what you are swapping and the 89 740 harness should be fine.
the 89 will be bosch LH 2.4, not regina/rex.
the motor mounts will be different as the 89 740 uses the hydrolic mounts, but i believe you can buy cheaper rubber ones.
i believe a couple of the engine block sensors may be different and should swap no problem, check fcp grotons site and compare part#s.
never heard of throwing in a used 400,000 mile motor, but i like the idea.
    good luck

      Hi Mike,

      Thanks for the response.

You should hear this 400k mile motor run! Perfect compression, excellent gas mileage, smooth as silk, never been towed, etc.

Checking the FCP site for sender part numbers is a great idea--I was wondering about coolant temp/knock sensors, but didn't mention it in my original post.

I didn't think mounts would be too difficult, as long as they weren't drastically different. Can't recall ever taking a good look at 740 mounts.

Wiring is my big concern. Seems easier to leave accessories (alt. AC & p.s.) on the '87 2.2 motor for the swap, but seems easier to swap accessories from the '89 motor to the '87 motor for the preexisting '89 wiring. Any advice there?

It'd be my first Volvo motor swap (though I've done it on older trucks before) so I'm a little nervous.

      Thanks again!

        hello all
i dont think the older block has a tap for the knock sensor, but others here will know, there is a way folks add the knock sensor but i have never done that.
for me i would use the 740 accesorie locations.
the motor mounts are different as are the mount brackets, but you will have all that stuff.
i only helped my friend swap two motors and a couple trannys so i dont have the experience others here have.
at least this will bring up your post to the top.
        good luck
        mike
