Stalling with codes 900 1992

My wifes' 92 960 has stalled several times and is sending codes 113,115 and 212. It seemed to happen while accelerating. When the check engine light came on, the car would die. It wouldn't start until I cleared the codes, then ran fine for a couple of miles until the check engine light came on, then it stalled again. Luckily I limped it home and have since bought another car (97 S90)so the pressure is off and the wife is happy. Having read several similiar problems, the first thing I checked was the injector wiring. Seems be good and the noid lit on all six cylinders. I have access to several volvo parts (due to an unfortunate accident of my first 92 960) so I changed the injectors and fuel pressure regulator (which was 3 pounds low), replaced the plugs and 02 sensor. I took it out for a drive and the 212 code came back, but no stalling. I also noticed the idle rpm being a little low so I cleaned the IAC with no change to idle or code 212. Using a DMM, it looks like the O2 sensor is seeing a rich condition as the voltage is high. Does this indicate a vacuum leak or a leak in the intake system even with a lower than normal idle? Any direction would be apreciated.

    Stalling with codes 900 1992

Hello, just thought I would give follow-up on my findings. I found the vacuum leak to be between the throttle body and intake manifold. I replaced the gasket and haven't had any DTC's for a week. If the 113 and 115 codes reappear, I'll let you know. Car is running great, thanks for all your direction. This is a great board for Brick owners!

Along with the other items previous posts asked you to check, Take a look at the relay by the drivers side front shock tower with I believe a solid red wire. One of the two relays contols the injectors and a problems with the relay can cause the 113 (No.s 1,3,5) and 115 (No.s 2,4,6) codes with the injectors.

I had numerous problems getting the 113 and 115 code on my 92 960 and finally was able to solve the problem with the connector for the relay controlling the injectors.

Besides a possible vacuum leak, you may have a bad intake gasket.

Also I am inclined to think that the 113/115 is a separate event. You could have some corroded ground points that could be the cause of that one.

Yeah, the corroded ground connection is a possibility as I didn't think to check the grounds when I checked the harness. It seems that if I had a vacuum leak the car would run lean (more air than normal) as opposed to rich though. My experience has been that the idle also is high instead of low as in this case. Could anyone help me to understand this? Is this a "Volvo thang"?
Thanks in advance for you time and knowledge.

When my car had an intake leak, the computer seemed to over compensate and it ran rich, a little black smoke on hard acceleration, black spark plugs and a black 02 sensor just after several hundred miles.
An hole in the exhaust system before the 02 sensor that allow fresh air into the exhaust system causes it to run lean. Counterintuitive for sure.

When I did my fault tracing, bought a small package of vacuum stem caps, the box contained various sizes, so I just capped all of the stubs that were on the manifold to see if that helped on the idle speed. Then I went to the propane gas around the intake, that did not show it either, not sure why but, in frustration just decided to do the intake gasket. My problem was the bolt holes were stripped so I had to helicoil all the bolt holes, problem solved.

I think that was certainly true on carburetor and open circuit fuel injection cars.

I'm not sure but perhaps because the closed-loop O2 sensor detects a leaner mixture, the ECU, in an effort to adjust the air/fuel ratio to 14.7:1, trys to drives the injectors or to adjust the IAC to a richer condition in idle mode, thus a rough idle. I don't know the ECU program, so please don't hold me to This. Perhaps there is someone reading this who could enlighten us.

On my '97 960, I've been chasing a DTC 232 code for some time now and the car has a low, rough idle condition like your '92; replaced plugs, air filter, O2 sensors, cleaned IAC, flame trap and trying to figure out the oil trap and its seals, that's next followed by the intake manifold, if necessary. I'm saving the injectors and a replacement of the IAC for last. Volvo uses a lot of vacuum devices on their cars and chasing a vacuum leak can be quite time consuming. Let us know when you find the solution.
