scan tech wheel hub 900

Need to replace the front wheel hub on my 95 940. I see that FCP Groton sells the OEM SKF hub for $145, and a scan tech hub for $110. Heard a lot of negative comments about scan tech parts. Any opinions on scan tech wheel hubs, or shoud I pay the extran for SKF?

Thanks for the advice. I decided to buy the SKF hub.

Spook, as usual, gives good advice. While I haven't tried the Scantech hub, I did have a Scantech center support bearing installed on my '83 240. That bearing failed in less than 2 years. I'd buy the SKF.

Dear augie,

Good p.m. and may this find you well. I'd go with the SKF part. SKF has been making bearings since the last Ice Age ended. It makes top-notch products.

A wheel hub is a mission critical part. Ifs failure can leave you stranded or get you (and your passengers) killed. By contrast, a cruise control failure is simply inconvenient.

My car hit some road-construction hazards. The impact was so violent, that the edges of each ball in the hub bearing "etched" lines into the bearing race, which keeps the bearing balls in place. These parts are made of a very hard steel. Thus, the impact was huge. The hub - factory-original Volvo - did not break or otherwise fail. The road builder's insurance company paid for new hubs, etc.

I think your life is worth the extra $35. It is cheap insurance.

Yours faithfully,

spook
