85 245 wont start 200 1985

Hello, I am stumpted although its not hard to do.. My 85 245 with the 2.0 non turbo wont start. It cranks over fine is getting a spark and I smell gas out of the exaust but it wont start. I have been having bad gas mileage (around 19 mpg) for the last year or so and I have noticed it has been harder and harder to start, takes about 4 seconds of cranking. I have new spark plug wires and the ignition coil checks out. Any advise would be appreciated. Thanks

Pull the vacuum hose off the fuel pressure regulator while it is running, is gas coming out? If so you need a fuel pressure regulator and you need to change the oil as it is probably contaminated with gas. Your Oxygen sensor and your cat converter are probably shot as well if this has beengoing on for a year? Dan

Okay I cant get it to start at all although it turns over fine, so i cant pull of the vacume hose while it is running. I did however check my oil and smelled it and it did have a good hint of gas. How does the gas get into the oil? I changed my plugs about 2 months ago along with the wires.

Pull the vac hose off the FPR and smell for gas, if it smells like gas the diaphram in the FPR is broken. Excess gas gets sucked into the intake manifold, doesn't burn and drains down the pistons into the crankcase. Excess gas will mess up the plugs very quickly. Dan

          85 245 Idles High 200 1985

Okay it is running! I put a new fuel preasure regulator on and it fired right up in like 1 second. Thanks for your helpful advise. I changed the oil and it seems to be running really well except it idles very high now right when i start it for about a min the slows down. Do you have any idea why this is happening. I dont want to mess with idle settings until i know what is wrong. Thanks. Jeremy

Good news. You should continue with a complete throttle body, idle air control valve and flame trap system cleaning.

            http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EnginePerformanceSymptoms.htm

Once that is done do the base idle check and adjust as needed

            http://www.brickboard.com/FAQ/700-900/EngineFuelinjection.htm#ThrottleBodyandThrottlePositionSwitchAdjustment.

These are relatively easy and inexpensive to perform. Get a new throttle body gasket and a can of carb or throttle body cleaner. Do not get the cleaner into the electrical parts of the throttle body or idle air control valve. Check the 700/900 FAQ's for the procedures as they are the same for you 200. Good luck. Dan

A fresh set of plugs after all that wouldn't hurt either!
