Automatic or manual trans? Very important information! Best wild guess is a worn out transmission mount.

I'm with Jorrell - probably the tranny mount, which is under the rear part of tranny. While underneath looking, see if it needs shift link bushings. Something like $1 per set.

The engine and tranny are bolted together and tend to move as a single unit.

The unit is mounted at three points, two morot mounts, and the tranny mount. The motor mounts are angled to allow the engine to drop to the ground in a front end collision rather than going into the driver's lap.

If the tranny mount goes bad, the motor mount angle lets the whole unit want to move rearwards just from its weight, no collision needed. More movement if the motor mounts are failing, which happens when the tranny mount goes bad.

So a bad tranny mount may be the cause of your problem. Noticeable when the shifter detents do not line up with the tranny detents, or the shifter seems pulled off to one side a little.

To install new mounts, start with the right motor mount. You will need to lift the engine about 1/2 inch. There are several ways to do this, but that's a whole 'nother thread.

You should check the right motor mount, easy to do with a cold engine. See how your hand fits between the mount and the oil filter. A work glove will help keep the grease off.

Good Luck,

Bob
