anyone know how long the individual battery cables are?

i can get better, for the money, than what FCP is offering.

just need to know the length.

thanks

thanks for the input.

not looking for a cheap way out. just looking to do better with my money.

FCP wants about $28 for each OEM style cable. my local AAP has pre-made 2g cables, with great terminals, cheap.

i can do two (thicker) AAP cables for the price of one OEM (thin) version.

jorell's right. i should measure. sorry for being so ridiculous.

i guess i'll have to remove the cable, measure it, put it back on so i can drive to the store, remove the cable again, & finally put on the new one.

very logical solution, no wonder i didn't thunk it up ;-)

S-P-H:

Sorry about my previous post, I was in somewhat of a flippant mood. Pageda's advice on measuring works great! One bit of warning though, be very careful unbolting the positive cable from the starter solenoid... it is quite easy to snap the stud/housing right off the solenoid. Now that can be a real PITA to replace!

You should be able to get a decent measurement without removing the cable, use some string or wire. Dan

string was the "back up", old school option. the new school option was to ask on the internet.

old vrs. new.

new vrs. old.

thought i would only have to get my hands dirty only once.

thanks again.

Oh... perfectly reasonable question. That's why the board is here. Give it a little more time: someone's bound to know/have done this before and knows the length. I think it's pretty admirable to build your own cable. Whereas I'm an "ad to cart" kind of guy.

This is very good advice and has worked well for me in the past. I'll typically add a couple extra inches to the measurement just to be on the safe side.

At one time on my 1984 244DL I was faced with a red cable that had corrosion far far up inside the insulation from the battery terminal.

After looking at the place where the other end connects (down on the starter) I decided to do this:

First I found a place to buy a crimp type butt connector for that wire size.
Then I got some large shrink tubing.

Got a cable from a junk yard. The battery end was not good, so I got a terminal from AutoZone that clamps onto the cable.

Cut a foot or so of junkyard cable, attached the terminal. Then did the butt splice covered with shrink tubing onto the cut back existing cable.

Very little reaching and de-greasing this way. Lasted many years.

Good Luck,

Bob

Don't mean to be rude, but measure twice and buy once! Err on the side of too long if you want to use an Optima battery whose terminals are swapped when compared to the factory battery.
