740 engine swap HELP 700 1990

hi all swapping a single cam engine into a twin cam car. noticed that on the fly wheel there's this ring around the out edges that ha sall these holes in it (58 of em) and then a spot big enough for 2 holes but it's solid. the engine i'm installing came out of car w/man trany. the fly wheel came out of a twin cam that died. these little hole's pass under a sensor on the back of the engine, i told that's the crank position sensor. hoe do i align this thing. there's a pick in my 240 haynse manual but i can't get mine in that position. they mention something about some pins. tried to post pics but it won't let me

Put the engine on #1 TDC. Install the flywheel so the hole void is in the opening for the starter.

740 engine swap HELP 700 1990

lets see if i can clarify.

90 740 gle 16 valve engine goes bad. was told i can swap in the 8 valve no problem.
aux shaft pully on 16 valve sheared off while driving and broke balance shaft belt or vice versa. either way timing is nmessed up. so not sure where the sensor was suposed to be to begin with. 16 valve has automatic tranny, and i'm going back with same tranny.

donor engine is out of a 85 740 gle. this car is a 4 spd man. on the crank pully some one wrote 91 740 gle. so this is not the original motor to the donor car. car was running till wire harness failure got it. co-worker sold it to me for 50$ at that point.

so i pull both engines. got everything swapped and noticed the holes in the ring line up with thew sensor on the back of the engine. but i don't know which hole to put on the top.

read this not sure if it applies to me.

You may also want to get the correct ECU for a B230F installed in a 740 with LH 2.4. In addition, you must change the Coolant Temperature Sensor, and Idle Air Controller. I'm not sure if the Idle Air Controller is the same for B234F and B230F engines with LH 2.4, but I'll guess they are. You'll probably want to install the correct fuel injectors for a B230F with LH 2.4.

Are you using the engine wiring harness from the B234F?

yes i'm using the b234 harness. the b230 harness is shot. i swiched out all the sensorts that i could because the plugs are different but the sensors themselves appear to be the same.

the b234 has an EGR wit 2 sensor in it. haven't figured out what to do with them????

Idle Air controller??

b230 fuel injectors are in the b230 and i hadn't planned on pulling them.

as far as the ecu i had been told that the b234 ecu would work with this motor. are you saying that this isn't true? are the pins and plugs the same for the 2 ecu's?

thanks for the fly wheel pick. i currently have mine 180 out from that position. i'll flip it over.

how did you get the picture up there.

Which transmission does the fianl product have, auto or manual? The flywheel with the ring around it is the automatic's flywheel and is no good with a manual. The manual flywheel has the divots for the crank position sensor machined into it. As for alignament, I'd use the distributor to get the motor at TDC, then put the flywheel on so that one of the solid spots is aligned with the sensor. That should, and I repeat SHOULD, work. I don't remember aligning anything when I put my manual in after converting from auto though. Seems to me that the flywheel only goes on one way, but I could be wrong here too.

Wow, can't quite figure out from what you said what engine is where and what flywheel came from what.

It sounds like a major head-ache if both engines weren't put at TDC and marked on the flywheels and crankshafts before disassembly.

With some expertise and know-how, you could figure this all out. I haven't seen these flywheels for awhile and so can't give you any pointers other than try to figure it out before re-installation. Don't know if the engine you got was pulled complete with fuel rails, manifold, etc, but if so, there should be a way for you to rig it up and start it out of the car so you can be sure you put it all back together correctly before install.

Hope someone pitches in and gives you some info...

Good Luck

Another thing to keep in mind is what type of ignition/injection system the donor car had. If the 8 valve motor came from a Rex/Regina car instead of a car with the Bosch system then the flywheel's trigger holes won't work with the crank sensor properly on a car with the Bosch system.

The Rex/Regina system can be identified by the large ignition coil assembly bolted to the driver's side strut tower. The computer under the passenger side footwell also says "Bendix" on it if memory serves. These systems can be found in many non-turbo 8 valve 740s and 940s from about '89-'95.

Best wishes with your swap!

Andrew S.

what becomes of the manual tranny? Did the owner sell you that with the engine? If so I could help you get some money back if you are willing, I need a few more parts to complete my swap.
