WRIST PIN NOISE 200 1980

I have a 1980 B21A Carb with 427,000 Km - runs well no oil consumption. Has the usuall piston slap on cold starts for ten minutes but my mechanic said there was wrist pin noise as well - expensive to fix.
So I need the bottom line - is this 'noise' anything to worry about?
Will the engine self destruct? Or will it just continue to run noisy and go for another 200K up to say 700,000KM?

Thanks to all. Mike

The wrist pin noise will be a "tinkling" sound, unlike the hollow clap of the piston skirt in the bore. It may also have a double rap compared to the piston slap. In the Volvo engine the pin load is carried into the rod in a bronze bush whose normal clearance is greater than that in the piston pin bosses. I have seen the small end bushes pounded out in the turbo engines, but almost never in the NA engines. New bushes are cheap, and installation is routine, but the whole engine comes apart to do it.
Fortunately the pin noise is benign, and is even less to worry about than the piston slap. Warm the engine fully before working it hard, and keep a 15W-40 oil in it.

Your mechanic must have very good ears to hear the difference. Basically, to fix the problem, it would require new pistons, new rods, new bearings, and having the cylinders bored out to resolve the piston slap. In short, a full bottom end rebuild. On the bright side, if you ignore the issue and a piston finally gives up, it probably won't do more damage to the engine than has already been done.

How long will it last??? Sorry, never studied fortune telling :)
