That is sweeet! Love the color! Is it me or does the 240 have a modern look to its otherwise classic shape. That second to last pic of the car can almost pass for a "modern" car.

Ugly Duckling:
You picked up on a modern design approach that involves the lack of "flash" appearance, and more importantly focuses on function without frills. In short, the car sits low, has low profile tires, hugs the road sitting still. It is also very square but manages to look modern.
The modern look is monochrome, the lack of chrome, the lack of accents. This is an approach that Volvo took in 91/92, it has only taken Chrysler 15 years to figure out how to copy the approach. How sad, now Chissler is on the auction block... 15 years later!

Folks,
Thanks for the kind replies! Someone asked how much the resto cost, so I'll try and break it down into a little more detail... sorry, if I add it all up myself, I'd probably puke!
Engine:
Head had to have a pit welded
Head refaced by 0.003"
Head Ported and polished
Three angle valve grind
Installed VX cam
Double oversized Mahle pistons
Bored the block 0.024" oversize
New oil pump
New mounts and balancer
New accy bushings
New AC compressor
New re-manned alternator
New water pump
Rebuilt starter
Full bearing and gasket set
Intake ported and polished inside and OUT.
Rough estimate would be $1600 with me doing the work (minus machining)
Transmission:
Removed the M47, driveshaft and pedals.
Replaced with an AW70 with 30K mile on a volvo rebuild (had it lying around)
Installed used auto driveshaft, shifter and pedals.
Made new tranny cooling lines
New kickdown cable
OD solenoid bypass (modified the existing solenoid)
Rough estimate is $350, actually $200 if you count the $150 I got for the M47.
Suspension:
25/25 sways
Urethane bushings all the way around
Bilstein HDs all four corners
16" Volvo Hydra rims with caps used in GC (no curb rash)
Yokohama ES100 205x50x16 tires
Upper chassis brace
Lower cherry bars
GT strut to firewall braces
IPD sport springs front and rear
New ball joints
New tie rods (in and out)
PS rack rebuild.
ATE powerdisks all 4 corners
PBR pads
SS braided brake lines
New wheel bearings
New steering column U-joints
Strip and powder coat all suspension parts
Rogh estimate is $2900
Interior:
New driver seat skin
Cleaned carpets
Had crack repaired in dash
New center console
New shifter cover
New map pockets
Full rebuild of the heater assy... fan, heater core, valve, resistor and on....
White LED lighting for the instrument cluster (in progress)
Added used small tach
Rough estimate is $500
Exhaust:
Custom downpipe
2.25" plumbing front to back
No resonator
Magnaflow in the rear
High flow cat
New O2 sensor
Powder coated exh. tip.
Rough estimate is $600
Body/exterior
New headlights and front turn signal lenses
Full wax and polish
Chem stripped the engine compartment
Repaired rust from the battery leak
Three coats of base color
Two coats of clear
Rough estimate is $500 ($300 was for the paint... i shot it)
Lessons learned from this rather enjoyable project
1: If a part isn't worth cleaning, it isn't worth reusing
2: Make sure you clock the flywheel at the proper angle before you install the trans to the engine and put it in the car... unless you don't want it to run!
3: Double my time estimate, 6 months became 12 months
4: Don't use FCP Groton's urethane accy. bushings
5: If in doubt, replace it.
6: It is possible to make an LH3.1 system work with an auto trans.
Hope the above info is helpful. Yes, it was a very fun project with a lot of interesting challenges. My thanks goes out to the Brickboard, I couldn't have done it without you!

25/25 sway with sports springs and HD Bilsteins ,low profile tires and with all other goodies.You got it mighty right. Must be amazing to drive on tight hair pins.

The handling of the car is uncanny, it took me forever to find the traction limit in the turns. It even handles better than my 2000 Eclipse which has KYB AGX adjustable struts and Eibach Pro springs, I think this can be mostly attributed to the superior weight distribution of the 240.
Honestly though, there is a price to pay for this level of handling... the ride is rough and I would not enjoy a 1000 mile run on the freeway.
One thing I would change though is to have the rear Bilstein HD shocks revalved to increase the rebound damping significantly as the tail is just a little too happy on the rebound after hitting a bump.

Completely amazing, John! I had no idea you'd undertaken such an ambitious resto-mod, I'm beyond impessed at your dedication.

You mentioned dedication, a key word in what drives my actions. So, why did I do this resto-mod? Simple, an 89 244 that we bought new provided almost flawless service until it hit 99K miles in 2002, then the wreck happened due to a cut tire and bad road design. Here is a picture of the result:
My Wife, Julia, survived the crash as did our Boxer Rielley (laying on the passenger side front floor). Julia did not walk away, although Rielley did. Julia broke her neck in the crash, but against 98% odds, she recovered 100%.
Dedication... while Julia was recovering for six months, I rebuilt a POS 90 244 for her to drive. She appreciated the effort greatly and drove the car for some time. Unfortunately, it was so "identical" to the 89 244, She was not happy with it due to it's wishy-washy handling that was identical to the feel of the 89.
The end result was that Julia found a 92 245 with 236K miles and told me to buy it and improve the handling. The end result is a rough riding noisy rocket ship that She loves to drive. Her reasoning behind the project was to take one of the safest rides on the road and massively improve it's ability to avoid trouble!
I honestly believe that our goal was reached as both Julia and myself have driven this car to the edge and beyond. It is highly predictable in it's response and is a pleasure to drive (minus the noise and rough ride). That being said, "Bleen", the nick name for this ride is one tool to be reckoned with on the autocross track!
Dedication, a powerful word and idea. The 89 244 gave us the reason based upon its reliability and life saving safety. We just cranked it up a bit with our efforts!
If I ask Julia which car she wants to drive (either the 06 XC-70 with 7300 miles or the Bleen with 249K on the clock, her response is always "Bleen"! Why you ask??? Simple, it is a simple reliable car that lets you know what is going on with the road.
That is what I call dedication to Volvo, and for that matter, life!
