Major Bummer (how best to handle ruined brass nut on break line?) 900

1994 940 wagon Turbo.
Changing the front rotors and pads I noticed the break hoses needed to be replaced also. I used the correct flare wrench (11m). At first I thought that all was cool until I realized that I had just destroyed the brass nut holding the line to the hose. Now I have to put in a new break line. I did this a million years ago.... but was curious if anyone had any advice. I dont see a part being available through FCP Groton....(the break line) Has anyone done this particular job?

Thx in advance!

Dru

FCP does stock metal lines in all lengths, and can get OEM parts usually too.

They stock a lot of stuff not shown on the web site. If nothing pans out locally, try them with your needs. These lines can be a real pain to get apart.

Good luck!

This is a high risk operation: usually one has to employ a top-quality flare wrench (Snap-On, not Sears) and heat with lots of penetrating oil to get this fitting loose. You can buy a new brake pipe from Borton Volvo and they are not that expensive. The Volvo OEM units are made of copper alloy and are easily bent to fit.

Hey Drew, Advance Auto Parts has the flare nuts and tubing, but if the line will come off with some vise grips, file the flats down and use a 10mm wrench. Pauli

See the FAQ on flare thread/angle types and the requirement to use the Euro standard, not US. Don't rely on some idiot at Advance Auto.

no. brake lines are not regular flares. the US uses a double flare, and the Benz has bubble flare ends. I am not positive which volvo uses.

you can re-flare your brake lines, but it is not like doing a copper tube. and you need a special tool.

best off to undo the line, and buy one that is same length or longer. you can always find a way to make a longer one work, but not one that is too short. most any parts store should stock a variety of metric lines, and it should only be a few bucks. bring in the old line, or at least the end, to match threads.

up here in the rust belt, most any brake work requires a new line or 2.
