petrol tank change over 200 1975

Hi guys,

I have a 1975 244dl with a bad petrol tank I would like to replace. This is why:
*It leaks when it's full (a bit from the top I think) and when it's nearing empty it makes the car unreliable as petrol becomes unavailable to the supply line when the car corners.

*The petrol pump (could be internal one or the external one, or both) make a lot of noise when petrol levels are low.

*The fuel level float sends inaccurate readings to the tank guage -- it fluctuates a lot when the tank is nearning empty.

I have a 1978 244dl that has none of these problems with the tank. BUT it is sadly not identical to the '75 tank. Firstly the pumps appear to be inside the tank and further along under the car, and secondly the wiring looks more complicated - there are more wires to start with and a relay that the '75 doesn't have.

Do you think that I should change them over? Does anyone have any tips on stuff to look out for? Can I fix up the '75's tank to get rid of some of these problems? Or should I just get a new tank? Where from too? Thanks a lot in advance for any help! Erik.

    ANSWER petrol tank change over 200 1975

    Leaking when full is not unusual as the intank pump tends to rust at the exterior pipes (get perforated).

    The noise and unreliability at low levels again may be just the intank pump. The suction tube may have rotted or fallen off, sucking in air when the fuel level drops below it.

    Suggest you access and remove the intank pump and take a look.

    Hi. Is it fair to guess that you're not in the U.S.?
    If so, we might have a hard time advising you because the cars here are a little bit different than yours, especially in such early years as the '70's.

    We want to help, but you have to be more forthcoming about details like your engine's fuel and fuel management system. For example, in the U.S. all such Volvos had fuel injection (K-jet, L-jet), whereas in a lot of other markets worldwide (including neighboring Canada), the same cars still retained carburetors until somewhat later. Also, there are differences between fuel injection systems that relate to the hardware in the tanks -- i.e., the fuel tanks are different.

    So write back with more details, please.

      Hi, thanks for the quick reply. Yes I am in Australia, not the U.S. Both cars have a B21e engine in them and are K-jet. This is all I know at present as I am far from being an expert in the field, but I hope that it is of assistance! I'll ask around to see if I can get any more details regarding the specifics of the cars. Thanks again for the reply! Cheers from Erik in Sydney, Australia.
