How to remove front clip ! ??? help! 444-544 1960

well, i've begun tearing into the PV, it's been hit front and rear, and is quite rusty too (needs a passenger side frame rail, and a fair bit of repair) and i cannot for the life of me get the fenders off, the PO has tack-welded them everywhere and then has put sheet metal screws AND the normal bolts all back in, i've got as much as i can find out, but it's still not budging. so, with that, i'm contemplating taking the entire front clip off. but, alas, i cannot figure out where to start. I've been trying to track down the volvo green book, but still, ahve had no luck with that either. When i get the front clip off, i'm going to straighten it out, remove all the trim pieces and such, and then hopefully make a fiberglass mold of it (looks like about 9 or 10 pieces are needed to do this so far) it'll be my first large-scale fiberglass endeavour (bigger than the sub boxes and dashes i've done) , but to get there, i need to figure out how on earth i can get this front clip off, and to boot, it's all been undercoated! egads!

i'll bookmark this thread, and if anyone has any specifics, feel free to email me odin1@shaw.ca, thanks!

man, this is gonna take the entire summer, i swear!

the plan is for me to pull the engine& tranny out of my 122 (a VERY strong running/built b20), and drop it into the PV after i weld up all the holes in the floor and body. Then once i get it running and not too bad, it's time to work on making a turbo 122s canadian, should be fun.

So, thanks again, in advance if anyone has any tips and or tricks as to how the sheet metal in the front comes off!

okay, just one question, should the hood line up exactly with the line of the fender at the edge?

The grill is attached with bolts or screws through holes in the front fenders on the rad side of the headlights, 2 bolts per side. The hood chrome is attached the same way, there are studs in the chrome throught the leading edge of the hood. The side chrome has spring clips but probably a clip with a stud and nut on each end . Yes the hood lines up with the flange on the fender (this flange is not part of the inner fender but part od the fender. The inner fender is butted up against the fender flange. On the inside the mounting clips are on the inner fender and bolts go through the fender flange into them

yeah, all the side chrome on the fenders was bolted on, but the ones on the fender are siezed and stripped and then rusted on top of it, so i'm in a touch of trouble on the front chrome piece. i havent pulled the headlights yet, just the trim rings and bulbs. I picked up a dummy redblock too, so things are moving along quickly.

i assume it lines up right on the seam between the fender and inner fender, so stuck it that way... today...

tack welded one side of the hood shut for now, got the headlights out, still cannot figure out how to get grille out. cannot get chrome on front of hood off, will carefully saw out the clips. after that, i'll tack the other side of the hood, and get it up on higher stands, work on the grille, and then buy a pressure washer and degrease it and start fixing up all the holes so i can make a mold.

I love the vertical gold stripes!

My first Volvo was a 60 544 w/B16. Totaled shortly thereafter and replaced
with a 59 544 with a very worn B16. Last PV was a 58 444 with a fairly good B16. Traded it off for my first 122 (of four) in early 1971.

From all the effort you are putting into it I wonder if a better carcass
could be had to save you a LOT of work......

yeah, if i could find a better carcass, it definately would be to my advantage, but whatever, this is what i could get my hands on, i paid farrr too much, and i'm a student, with a fair bit of spare time, not a whole lot of money, and enough tools laying around. to do quite a bit of fun work. i've gotta go get some oxyacetelyne bottles this week, and then i should be set.

      Edmonton man, hows about you?

as an update, i got the front clip off today, stripped down the engine, and it's ready to pull, bellhousing / bolts are too corroded from a spilled battery, so i'll have to figure out where to put jackstands on the rearso i can undo the driveshaft and x-member and get it all outta there. As well, i'm going to go out tonight and start building my jig so i can straighten, repair and then mold the front end.

I'm near Toronto. Too bad I would like too see the making of that glass front end. A note here if those tires are still on your car (look like Michelin ZX or XAS), I strongly recomend you replace them as they will be as old as the car and not safe to drive on. Good luck on the project.

hah, yeah, dont worry, they're just on there to roll it in and out of the garage while i do stuff. If you ever get the chance to come out this way, stop by, have a beer. It's a nice slow-going project, but something fun for sure. I'm going to end up using a merkur xratty subframe withg scorpio hubs on the front and probably a 4-linked ford 8.8 on the back.

Don't get too carried away with the fancy stuff. Get it on the road first and enjoy it. Then you can do your upgrades as winter projects, they are plenty long enough there. My car is a 64 and I have had it about 32 years. It has spent most of that time in my garage moving from house to house with me. I got serious with it about 5 years ago and got it on the road late last summer. The work restoring the car is definately very enjoyable but I think driving the finished project is even more fun. Get involved with a local car club, Volvo prefered of course because having other people of the same interest to relate to makes is even more enjoyable. I have met so many unselfish good hearted people willing to go to almost any length to help me with no expectation of payment, and some of these people were complete strangers (now we are good friends) because they love to work on cars too even if it isn't theirs. Try it you will be glad you did.

You are a lot closer to B C than I am and I have bought quite a bit from Olof Mamburg. He has a site www.vintageimparts.com check him out for the Volvo parts that you can't substitute. Have fun with the project and if I am out your way I will look you up. (email me off the board(s.knowles@rogers.com ) I have a sister in Edmunton but I havn't talked to her for a while, I'm kind of the black sheep of the family.

                keep rolling.

yeah, i've found a few volvo goons in the area here, no big club, until you go to calgary, but it's not that bad. I know there is another PV in town, but have never run into the guy anywhere, except knowing that he snags every K and A cam at the wrecking yards. heh.

Needless to say, this car is a pretty long winded project, but when it's all said and done, it should be fun. The reason i'm upgrading the front and rear suspension so heavily, is because the stock stuff is on drums, and not in very good shape at all, there are no 122/1800 parts cars for hundreds of kilometers in any direction, and there are a few merkurs at wrecking yards. plus, the merkur steering box is a LOT quicker than the old volvo one. As well, this car may see some light rallying, and combining the very successful volvo platform, with the very successful ford cosworth platform could prove very interesting. A bit archaic with a live axle in the back, but it should still be fun.

Well, almost have it off now, pulled the bumper, and figured out the bolts it takes around the edges and cut out the spot welds. Need to find the ones at the front under the rad now, and then get it molded up. Gotta go buy a few gallons of tooling gelcoat and other goodies, it'll be quite a large project.

yeah, so any idea how to start getting the front sheet metal off? i see you still used the stock inner fenders, is the whole new fiberglass front end attached to the stock hood hinges there (with some modifications)? hmm.

i'm thinking of taking the whole front off with the quickie saw now, tack-welding it together, smoothing it all out and straightening it up, then molding the whole shebang.

so, i guess when it stops raining here, i'll get the front end off. somehow.......

No stock inner fender wells. It is a one piece fiberglass front end including everything forward of the firewall. 8 pieces. You will need a radiator support and the front clip will need to "slide" out from the front (forward) to allow for the steering rods as it tips up. If you want to "lift off" you won't need this but you will need some handles.

        http://www.georger.com/544_volvo_front_end.htm

As for the removal. The fenders are bolted to the inner fender wells at the top and the "nose" piece which is a a radiator shell. At the bottom of the page (Above link) you can see some fiberglass front fenders only that I bought 15 years ago. you can see the shape and profile of the fenders only. If the previous owner welded the front of the front fenders to the shell you will need to remove as a chunk. At the bottom of the radiator shell are two large bolts that go through a plate (bracket) welded to a round frame cross member.(between the horns) To the rear are bolts to the body inside the fenders.

        Off she comes!

Thanks, that helps, i think, as well the pictures on

http://www.georger.com/stage_1_v2.htm seem to be helping a fair bit..

it's not raining today, so i'm getting the beetle out of the garage, and then working on the volvo. we'll see how it goes.
