V90 side cargo glass replacement S90-V90 1997

Wise ones:

Need some advice. My 1997 wagon attracted a lacrosse ball through the left rear ¼-panel window (the fixed glass on the driver’s side of the cargo area). A discount glass company came with replacement glass, but discovered the gasket was bonded to the old glass. They can get the glass, but can’t get the gasket or gasket/glass assembly – even from the local dealer. Found a junkyard about 200 miles away, but they could not get the glass/gasket off without ruining the gasket.
Is this bonded-to-the-glass thing something unique for the 1997/1998 year to fix a leak problem? Is the dealer or installer just incompetent? I started off trying to get glass with the antenna like the original, but now I just want to close the hole….It’s hard to believe there is no way to repair a car that is only 9 years out of production. Anyone have experience with this or ideas for what I can do?

I’ve posted a duplicate on the 960 board too.

Thanks,

Mike

    1997 V90 / 960 Wagon (965) left rear quarter glass with in-glass antenna S90-V90 1997

    Future Searcher,

1997 960 Wagon (965) / V90 left rear quarter glass with in-glass antenna. I initially ordered $165 installation of aftermarket glass without antenna. Installer brought just glass, but found that the rubber that holds the trim pieces is permanently glued to the glass and cannot be reused. Local Ohio dealer ordered two different part numbers, but neither was right. Design changed for last 6 digits of VIN after 033xxx, but dealer catalogue is still unclear. Even the North America warehouse guy in Rutherford, NJ said there was no such thing.
George from Volvo of Keene saved the day. I got Part Number 9447546. The picture shows a thicker line outlining the glass and the description included “per glue”. The glass included the rubber, clips to install the trim, and in-glass antenna.
Installation was trivial with fast-dry Urethane. Install the upper (body color) trim first by sliding the clips with a small screwdriver from the edge. I used a little extra urethane at the top-rear corner since that is where the roof gutter drains. The bottom trims just presses in. Total cost about $450 sounds high, but I was starting to panic.

Can you use the piano wire trick of feeding a wire through the bond, then slicing it along the length of the bond through back and forth sawing motion?

Hello, I have that glass. I will look and see how hard it is to remove. I can't believe its that hard a job. I have done several 960 wagons and it takes about an hour from start to finish to replace. I can also check my local supplier Monday. Pauli

      Thanks Paul,
Looks like the adhesive is only along the inside edge - nothing along the sides. Seems like you'll need a deep razor from the inside and someone to help when it's ready to pop. The dealer thought they could get the right stuff, but they ended up with just glass twice...Curious what your supplier says.
      Thanks for the help,
      -Mike

It just a piece of glass. The seal is fast dry urethane. Pauli

          Pauli,
I would definately make a mess of making my own seal and cringe at the thought of black fingerprints all over the back end. If we were closer I'd turn it over to you, but it's a long drive from here....
I'll keep looking for someone willing to extract the glass with at least the outer face of the gasket intact. Urethane will make the seal, but still hoping for a clean foundation to hold the trim and keep asthetics.
          Thanks for taking the time,
          -Mike

I've not tried them yet but Tasca Volvo has the lowest online prices I've seen.

I found a rear quarter glass listed for $400 or so I believe. Not sure if it's the right item as it's same price as the right.

    Good Luck,

I have a 1997 965 too. The thought of having to replace that LR cargo glass worries me. At some time that cost could exceed the value of the car!!

What would happen if you replaced the LR glass with a RR glass? Looks to me like it ought to fit, except for the loss of the in-glass antenna.

About that - look at the left rear above the top of the "D" pillar. My 965 has a little square thing that looks like the sort of gadget that Volvo uses to cover a hole that was used by some earlier model. I think it is the location of the power antenna used on 745 or 945 or earlier 965 cars.

Seal bonded to glass?? Sounds like the moon roof deal. Bad seal = leaks = new roof = $900 + labor. Urk urk.

Somebody knows what outfit makes that glass. Maybe some of our European or UK friends can check it out.

    Good Luck,

    Bob

      Bob,
I went through the same thoughts for living without the antenna on the glass, and also found a $40 window-mounted antenna from Autozone. In the meantime, I'm getting very good reception from just the amplified leads dangeling in the back! Having the antenna on the glass is low on my list of concerns.
