Need throttle return spring for HS6 SU carb 444-544

On interstate 87, NYS Thruway last night and without warning the engine speed took off revving really high. I shut the engine off, coasted - this is in slow traffic at rush hour, two lanes and a semi behind me. I coast to the edge, not really a breakdown lane, pop the hood and the front throttle return spring has snapped at the head washer. I pull it off and try and bend a loop, metal snaps again. Then I bend an L and put the good end on the head washer and the L on thethrottle (mistake). This has taken less than a minute and off we go. Until it happens again about 15 miles later and this time we're off the thruway, and the spring falls off and is lost, so with 2 small binder clips (holding together my fine sandpaper, emory cloth collection in the toolbox) and an elastic hairband (thanks Connie!) I'm able to rig up another temporary fix. I thought that I had at least one other throttle return spring in my "culch heap", but alas, I can't come up with one! Anybody got a good, unrusted spare they could drop in the mail to me?
thanks
Danny

Contact me offline for address, or if you're in the immediate area (Honeychrome, Kai, Pooch) let me know and I'll come and get it.

    Danny;

Kai has is right...what you are looking for is a spring with a similar "spring constant", that is, a spring which has a similar elongation for a similar amount of tension...and you will get this from a spring with similar wire gauge and geometry...an important thing to watch for also is the number of turns...too few and you reach the springs limit in extension length before your linkage has run out of movement (force starts going up real fast then too)...better too many turns than too few!

I'd start by asking to see the standard "throttle return springs" at a well stocked automotive place...you might want to take the remaining spring in with you, to match it up...you'll obviously need to gently bend some endloops...finally, I put a piece of teflon sleaving around the end loops to keep them from being worn through (which is likely cause for loosing spring).

    Cheers

I don't know precisely which SU carbs you are running, but I have the HS6's.

The previous information was all good, but I'd recommend you put a return spring on each carb. Without a return spring, your carb may not return to full idle, considering the 'slop' built into the carb-to-carb linkage.

Besides, if one fails, you'll still have good control with the remaining one.

I made both my springs from some generic carb springs. Plenty of turns, so they aren't too strong.

      Good luck!

      Steve

    Danny,

I was also going to suggest a good hardware store. They usually have a selection of springs off of a display board. That's what I ran on for better than a year. It will definitely get you going but I found that there was no 'perfect match'. The one I chose for the front carb hooked around the clamp for the upper radiator hose. Beware of using springs with too much tension; they'll cause your shaft bushings to wear more quickly.

    Danny,
Any hardware store spring of approximately the same dimensions will do. A while ago I limped into a True Value with the aid of a rubber band and a paperclip, got some likely looking springs out of their drawer and fixed the problem right there in the parking lot.

    Hi Danny,

I remember having trouble sourcing these as well. If I remember correctly I ultimately bought new ones from VP Autoparts in South Carolina.

Christer or Cecilia will likely drop one in the mail to you the same day. I'm not sure I have a spare or not. I won't be back to my car until next weekend.

    Good luck.

    Kai
