1994 940 Turbo, no turbo badge, sunroof etc. 900 1994

I just checked and drove a '94 945t which was a bit of a surprise. First of all, it doesn't have a sun/moon roof, has steel wheels and no Turbo badge on the liftgate.

The drive was so much more refined than my '88 745t with M46. Just a couple of minor points, seatbelts don't retract as they should and the brakes pulse during harder stops. I wanted to make sure it wasn't the transmission so I shifted to neutral during a stop and the shudder was still there. Not bad but probably going to need rotors & pads soon. An easy job.

The car was very clean inside and out and no evidence of leaks underneath. Dry around the bellhousing, trans and frame rails. Very clean and dry in the engine compartment too. No rust and dry inside.

I'm going to run a Carfax check fwiw, (one of my wife's accidents from several years ago still doesn't show up on CF and there was a police report, insurance claims etc.) I'm looking primarily for the registration trail.

We called 'em stealth Turbos 900 1994

A lot of 94 and 95 cars don't say Turbo on them anywhere and they have no boost gauge. They don't have 16" wheels but may have 20-spoke alloys or 10-spoke alloys or steel wheels.

Some even have cloth interiors, I've driven one. Didn't know it was a 940 Turbo until I checked the oil and saw the heat shields.

The end production cars definitely are odd. Some have sunroofs, some don't.
Nothing wrong about them, but they're not as deluxe as some of the earlier cars. The advent of the 850T supplanted these as the top of the performance food chain. Apparently Volvo took their once-flagship down-market a bit.

The pulse with a steering wheel shimmy is most likely worn out control arm stay bushings, which is a common problem with 940s after 8 plus years. Do not think about replacing the rotors until you replace the bushings otherwise you can ruin the rotors.

Some 940Ts did not have the turbo badge. You may find that there is not a boost gage either. It was a mix and match in 1994 and 1995. My son’s 95 940T has the badge but no boost gage.

Thanks,

There is a boost gauge to the right and below the speedo or clock. Carfax came back with a clear title history but there was a minor accident in '03. The owner told me his wife was involved in a rear-ender but didn't go into a lot of details even when asked about the extent of the repairs. Thing is, I thought we were talking about being rear-ended. The report states there was an airbag deployment so now I'm going to have more questions and arrange to see it again. If the car was run into someone I'll be checking the front of the engine compartment carefully. Initial impressions stand though and it does drive and track extremely well.

Still looking around though. These cars are not rare around here.

The SRS system is extensive on the 94-95 940. The impact sensor is under the driver’s seat and when it senses a certain G force it sets off the airbags and the pyrotechnic seat belts, which takes up the slack. Replacement of the components is costly. All components have to be replaced including the sensor.

Ask for receipts for the body work to check the extent of damage, and for the repair of the SRS system. Get the car inspected at a Memphis dealership. You can use this as bargaining power. Don’t walk away yet. I could still be a good car.

Tail gate replacement may explain why you do not have the turbo badge.

Millington, been there, done that, may years ago.
