vdo gauge help needed 200

Hi. My stock temperature gauge is no longer accurate. I plan on adding a VDO Vision gauge. The egauge.com part number is 310-105. I am confused as to which sending unit I need. I have no idea what size threads I have with out removing it before ordering. Does anyone recall this or which one they used? Also, they list a bushing kit. Do I need this? Thanks.

Bob:

Back up for a minute! What is your temp gauge doing? Have you bypassed the temperature compensation board in the instrument cluster? Have you measured the resistance of the temp sensor for the gauge? What about the condition of the temp sender wire on the engine?

Personally, I have never seen a "temp gauge" fail on a 240, but if yours has failed, I've got a spare thats looking for a home! Based on the map, if you are in Columbus, NC, I live about an hour or so away in Advance, NC just West of Winston-Salem. Need help? If so, look up my email address on this website and drop me a line... we'll set something up.

The T-comp board bypass is easy and corrects 98% of temp gauge problems. The 740 FAQ covers it quite nicely.

In recent months the gauge would sometimes read 10-11 o'clock. I would stop and check the temperature of the engine and it would not be hot. Sometimes I can hold my hand on the upper radiator hose. I saw the bypass in the ipd catalog. I like the idea of the gauges with the numbers. I have the small bezels so I was thinking of adding a VDO water temp. gauge and a oil pressure gauge.

To get the temp gauge working again, definitely do the comp board bypass. Let us know what horrid things you do to the comp board once it is removed! Consider it a sport! So far, folks have done the following to this abhorrent piece of comp board technology:

1: Shot by a 12 Gauge deer slug.
2: Strapped to a exploding bottle rocket.
3: Tossed into an industrial strength joint chipper.
4: Countless other methods I can't recall, but add to the list if you can!

If you still want to add a separate temp gauge, the VDO shop should know what temp sensor is in the engine. For oil pressure, you'll need to replace the oil pressure switch with an oil pressure sensor... should be matched to the gauge.

Hope that helps!
