B18 Distribution Pipe Removal and cleaning. 444-544

Hi all,

In response to my recent post "B18 overheating"

I have followed most of the suggestions I got from the list including replacing my temp sending unit / guage and putting in a new bosch coil. The old coil was 6vt and needed to be changed out anyway. I cant find any intake leaks and no signs of a lean mixture to the rear cylinder. The thermostat is correct and opens when it should.

Since the same problem of a hot rear cylinder head persists, I'm inclined to believe that there is something plugging the rear most holes in the distribution pipe.

I have all the parts/gaskets/freeze plugs here ready for me to pull the head and check the distribution pipe. I also have my Volvo parts catalog and an old Hanes manual covering the B18.

Does anyone have any suggestions or things I need to look out for when pulling the cylinder head?

Is the Distribution pipe bolted in, or indexed inside the head in any way?
Does the distribution pipe slide out the front, or the back of the head easier?

Thanks, any help would be appreciated. The manual just doesn't cover this.

Cheers
Rob

It's a long thinwall brass tube rolled from sheet in sort of an oval shape
with a longitudinal kink and 4 slots in it to spray the water over the hot
spots. I believe it is most easily pulled out of the front. If there is a
lot of scale or rust in the jacket it may be kinda hard to pull.
