Use of gasket sealer ???? 200

Today I removed my throttle body, intake, and oil trap. The throttle body was full of oily crud. I'm surprised that my volvo was ruuning so well. The intake runners and the back of the intake valves were also pretty dirty. I'll clean the throttle body and every thing as best as I can. My oil trap was surpisingly clean but the oil ring was completly flat and brittle. So I replaced it. The old throttle body and intake gasket did not have any gasket sealer, they were stamped steel. The new ones are some type of paper composit, should I use gasket sealer on these? I only want to do this job ONE time. Putting the flame trap back in with new hoses looks like a lot of work. Any tips now that the throttle body and intake are off.

I used TRV on both sides of the TB gasket and intake gasket. I know its not necessary but I don't want to have to do the job again. Most modern gaskets have a bead of silicone build in around every port.

I cut up an old cereal box made of cardboard, installed dry - 'still on there no problems. If you oil box is clean but there is excessive blowby in intake - then my guess is that the pcv system is clogged. Clean it.

Thanks for the good advice. My old gasket was paper not stamped steel. It was just very old. I reinstalled the intake with no gadket sealer as per your advice. I wonder how did car guys get along without the internet ????

On all other intake gaskets that I have replaced (American Muscle cars) in my lifetime. I have always used gasket sealer. But the carb. gasket I have always in stalled dry. But since a throttle body uses much more vacum do you think it might need some sealer ? The old gaskets were like a soft stamped Copper gasket, similar to a head gasket.

Don't use any sealer - install the gaskets dry.

Put the paper gaskets all in dry. I always smear a little RTV around the O ring on the base of the oil trap and I replace the oil trap, they are fairly cheap.

Updated flame trap parts 200

If your car had the flame trap below the intake, you can get the later version of parts kit and convert to the slightly better later version.

Slightly larger breather box doesn't clog up as easily.
Hose going up from breather box to flame trap is longer; flame trap goes next to valve cover under fuel rail.
Flame trap holder and fat hose to air intake tube are slightly different.

fcpgroton.com has the parts.

Cleaning the flame trap in the revised location is easier but still a PITA.
