Took a 960 for a drive ... A/C idea for 745T 700

Recently a friend let me drive their 1992 960. Wow! My 1989 745T seems like a unrefined tractor in comparison ... although over the long haul I'll have an easier time fixing said "tractor" and not having electronic climate control et al farg up.

Now, onto my idea/question. I've often thought the A/C return route which travels past the exhaust manifold/turbo is not ideal. The line going back to drier/receiver will pick up a HEAP of heat from exhaust manifold/turbo. But looking at my friend's 960 engine, I noticed Volvo covered the manifold with an alum heat shield:

My question for A/C equipped B230's: Has anyone added a heat shield and noticed an appreciable difference in A/C temps?

    Took a 960 for a drive ... A/C idea for 745T 700

    Hi,
    I'm considering whether to strike out with a later model RWD Volvo!
    I now have a 740T 1991 with some blow by and I suspect a turbo that needs seals.
    Why do I think it needs seals?
    1. I call the car "The Squid' (when I stomp on it hard a cloud of black smoke is behind me!} {yes I know it could be a rich fuel mixture, but I use oil on the road, Maybe a qt a tank full}

    So my question is is the performance of the 960 equal too the 740T?

    Yes I know it has the 24 valve engine! (I was a Volvo Marine dealer, every customer I ever had with a Volvo 170 {16 Valve} eventually puked an engine. Most of them only bent valves and broke a valve guide or two. They just could not believe that a timing belt change at 500 hours was a must.)

    What I'd really like is a nice 940 T sedan but they seem rather scarce.

    On the other hand maybe I'll spend some $$ on the 740 and see if I can get 300,000 miles on it!

    Appreciate any words of wisdom!

    Regards

    Woody

    if you're concerned about it, you could hit the boneyard and get a replacement heat shield for yours. I know the '90 year model had them, I imagine yours may have had one at one time.
    That said, it really wouldn't make any difference on yours since the orfice tube on an 89 should be in the firewall fitting, so any heat on the high pressure side really wouldn't be much of an issue. the refrigerant esentially sheds heat under high pressure and absorbes heat at low presure so it doesn't really absorb heat until it gets to the evaporator inside the passenger compartment( this is the simplified version, let's not get not picky, I know that's not an accurate description, but it's easier to understand )

    on the later models the orfice tube was installed in the line near the condensor on the framerail.
