Speedo got me in trouble 200

I got pulled over doing 70 in a 50 zone last week. I told the officer I was doing 60 he didn't believe me though. I had the Volvo tested and sure enough the readout is off by 10 MPH at 60. Off even more if you go faster. But only off by 5 MPH under 55. I have origional rims but i have 185-70-14 tires. That should only add about 3 mph. What gives?Any ideas for the correction. Please don't say tape new numbers on the speedo. My 16 year old hates this car enough. Too bad for him as it will probably save his skin some day. Jay

"My 16 year old hates this car enough. "
He probably likes it more now. Since he found out it can break the speed limit.

As BC suggests, get info off your differential (small tag possibly undercoated). The speedo drive in your tranny may have been replaced with one for a different diff. (I think) The speedometer in the instrument cluster has a number which gives info about what diff it is suited for.

Speedo got me in trouble 200

It is a 1980 242 2 door sedan with low miles (71000) it sat a long time before i bought it. It has a cable driven spedometer. I removed the cable from the head leading to the Lambda Sond warning light. Never did the transmission swap. I believe everything is origional and correct. My belief is based on the car appearing untampered with. All origional componets as far as I can see. The speedo needle has a very slight bounce to it but progresses smoothly otherwise thru the MPH range. I could try replacing the cable. Based on my MGB experiences with this situation that may be a dead end though.

Often the automatic tranny 240s have a 3.73:1 rear axle ratio, while the stick shift cars have the 3.31:1 ratio. The speedo drive gears, one in the tranny and one on the bottom end of the cable, are designed to match up with the rear axle ratio.

Which tranny is in your car?

I think the stock tire size can be found on the rear edge of the right door. Maybe on the left, "older" 240s differ in label location from the newer models.

You may be able to lubricate the speedo cable. We used to use dry graphite powder for this. Requires removal of the cable from the speedo head (means pullikng the instrument cluster) and then squirting powder into the cable. I think you could also move the inner spinning cable in and out of the housing to work the powder on in farther. DO NOT use any liquid lube.

Good luck, and keep us posted. You have a real stumper of a case.

      Good Luck,

      Bob

The speedo wavering is reminiscent of a catching drive cable but would not cause the calibration issue. If everything else is original in the driveline, it may be time to find a VDO gauge dealer that also does repair and calibration. The other option would be to find one with the identical part number on the bone yard, ie. take your chances.

      Good luck!

To get the needed info, I checked your previous posts. It seems you have an 80 240 but we don't know if it is a sedan or a wagon... important as they run different sized tires. In a previous post, you also mentioned that you wanted to change the transmission, did you do that? Also, do you know if the speedo is original to the car or has it been replaced.

If I recall correctly, the 1980 models had a cable drive for the speedo / odo, if this is the case (even if it isn't), tire size, wagon/sedan info, transmission info, rear differential info, and info about the originality of the speedo is critical to diagnosing the problem.

In short, better info, better answers! Give the details and I'm sure someone will be able to help you out. Note that speedo calibration drift usually causes a speedo to read high, not low, so it seems that something is mismatched.
