Oxygen sensors 900

I'm replacing the oxygen sensors on the next couple of days (engine runing rough and black smoke from the exaust, running rich, it mostly happens when engine is started after being hot) any thing tricks or things to watch out for?

Hi, Use only Volvo sensors, the leads are longer and connect straight into the plastic block by the bell housing near the dip stick for the transmission. Yes , they are more expensive BUT they will last you another 100,000 as mine did. Volvo say that you should not solder or join in any way these leads. When mine first went faulty i had the cheaper ones joined on but never again, I was doing about 10 to the gallon complete with more black smoke.I still had to buy the proper ones to have fitted and then it ran perfect and 30 to the gallon at 75mph on motorways. I learned the expensive way? Regards

I recommend using the expensive Bosch (OE) sensors as opposed to generic units and soldered connections. Spray the sensor(s) with penetrating oil several times and use the special O2 sensor wrench. If the 96 has a front sensor (which I believe it does), the connector is at the end of a long pigtail that is in a difficult location to disconnect (at least for me). From underneath, it's on the driver's side of the engine/trans, up high near the bottom of the firewall.(I hope that makes sense).

Yes the expensive Bosch (OE) sensors $169 front and $175 rear, but I guess it has to be done. Do I need any special wrench or socket.
thanks

A special socket is HIGHLY recommended. They are not expensive and all auto parts stores carry them.

I also suggest using a little anti-seize on the threads of the new units. Only a little though and make sure it is only on the threads. You don't want to foul the new sensors.
