Instrument Panel Problem 200 1988

I have a problem with my instrument panel and I have no idea what went wrong. Everything was working fine except for my odometer. I purchased an odometer gear, put it in, then hooked up all my electrical connections just as they were before I removed the panel, but now nothing works at all on the entire instrument panel. Does anyone have a clue about went wrong?

    I found the problem with my Instrument Panel. I pulled everything apart to clean the connections as you had suggested, and saw that I had misaligned the 3-prong connecter that brings the connection from the instrument panel to the speedometer unit. Thanks everyone for all your help.

    FWIW, the flexible printed circuit IP wiring can get damaged where the connector mates with the plated flexible copper strip. Although you maybe already checked it, is the connector fold in the right place, even when you snap in the connectors?

    With all due respect, I'd guess that something isn't exactly as it was before.

    Just to let you know I don't have an overinflated self opinion, how do you think I learned all the below? Can you say "smoke from dashboard"?? That was due to red + white wire on the wrong connector, if I recall correctly.

    A few things to check:

    #0) Clip connector with right-angle design goes onto back of speedo.

    #1) Red and white striped wire behind the cluster is ONLY for a tach and will ruin other devices. Easily attached (incorrectly) next to top of speedometer, towards center of car OR at bottom corner of cluster, again towards center of car. (UK - Aussie - Japan cars might be reversed, I don't know)

    #2) Yellow + orange striped wire goes to lower corner of cluster, towards center of car.

    #3) Orange wire is for cruise control. Goes to either of the two spade lugs next to speedometer as described in #1.

    4) There is a strip of plastic + copper going across the top of speedometer. Attaches with small screw at each end. Needs to carry current so can't be damaged.

    Good luck - I bet you'll figure it out.

      I wish it were that simple, but I am certain that I hooked up everything correctly. I have a second 1988 240, one is a sedan, the other a wagon, so the first thing I did was the instrument panel off of the other volvo to be certain that I hooked the faulty one up right. There was one thing that was working on my instrument panel, the overdrive indicator arrow light. Everything else is dead. I thought maybe something had shorted out, or a ground had come lose, but I can't find anything wrong. Anyway, thanks for your response.

        Sven's right about the tach. If both of your cars have a tach, or both have NO tach, they'd be wired the same. If one has it and one doesn't, there'd be a difference but it should be specific to that one wire.
        The tach connection only accounts for a single white & red-stripe wire anyway.

        I did this before with a 91 240. Installed the tach, put it together, nothing worked. Something was definitely wrong but I didn't fix it exactly; I pulled it back out to inspect my work and put it in again, and everything was just fine. When it was screwed up, the tach did not work and several warning lights were stuck on.

        You may be similarly lucky. To this day I don't know what I did, and when I sold that car, I took the tach out, and put the clock back, and saw no evidence of problems on that go-round. I have to assume I had a dirty ground connection or something odd like that.

          fuse? 200 1988

          There's a fuse labeled "clock". It's #1, if I recall.
          May as well check all the fuses. They like to corrode, especially the gray/white ones.

          Spin them in the holders to help cut through any corrosion, while pressing the contact grabbers together.

          And again, check the connector for speedo.
          Specifically, look inside the wire's clip and find the little grabbers. Help them work better. Spray clean with contact cleaner, and probably bend slightly so they grip tighter. I know this makes no sense but I believe I read that connector provides power that runs much of the rest of the cluster.

          When in a junkyard pick up as many brass/copper fuses as you can; they hold up better than the grayish ones.
