Broken control arm 200

I'll make it short. Replacing control arm bushings with poly today. Spent several hours doing so. Almost finished and went to torque the pocket bushing bracket to 50ft/lbs as IPD's instructional video says. Broke the stud.

So I'm guessing that means my control arm is trash, I need a new one. FCP has Scantech control arms. Are they garbage like the rest of their stuff is reputed to be?

I smoked my A-arms over Christmas break while replacing the bushings. I got the Scan-Tech units from fcpgroton since I, too, needed the car back on the road ASAP. The Scan-Techs seemed to be of a slightly lighter gauge steel, but they were dimensionally accurate. I've get a few thousand miles on them now, and they seem fine.

As good as a new one probably is, I'd just pull one off a junk for $10.

I've seen quite a lot of bent ones but never heard of anyone doing what you described. The stud must have been weakened by rust? Weird. Don't pull so hard next time.

    Good luck!

Ordinarily, Rob, I'd agree, but I can not bring myself to spend an hour or so grunting over crusted on bolts in the junk yard with a breaker bar then another hour or two burning/cutting/beating the old bushing sleeve out with a punch. And that's assuming I can talk a parent into lending me their vehicle to get to the only yard around here that consistently has 240's, about 30 miles away. I think I'm going to have to suck it up and buy a new one. I need the car to be operational, pronto, and breaking the fricking control arm right as I was wrapping up the project has just left me defeated.

BTW, I had to beat the control arm out of the pocket bushing because it was rusted in - rust and the beating probably both played a part in the breakage.

Wow! Sounds like yours was even more rusty than the stuff I usually see!

Once in a while I get one with really rusty arms, and find that the bushing sleeve is rusted onto the control arm stud. But 90% of the ones I've had apart just slid apart like they're supposed to.

Even if you take the whole bushing bracket with you, you'd be better off than spending the money for a new one. If you do buy a new one, be sure to order a nut- I don't think it comes with. Dunno the thread, M12 I'm guessing, since it's a 19mm nut. I assume your old nut is stuck hard to a broken off piece of stud?

The worse problem I've seen is having some of the 4 little bolts for the ball joint top bracket break off in the bottom of the strut tube. Talk about a pain- you're not drilling those out. Be glad you haven't had to deal with this.

        Good luck with it.

I need the car ASAP, for work and cetera. I'm borrowing the old 245 to drive up to the dealer today where I can cry a little as I shell out an insane amount of money for a hunk of steel. They said $140 on the phone.

The odd thing, Rob, is that the arm itself has no rust on it - not a single spot. But the stud was crusted into the bushing.

I'm going to look at it this way - If I'd paid someone else to replace these bushings, around here it would have cost a couple hundred bucks. Even if I'd just taken them to a shop to press out the bushings they probably would have charged me half that. This way, I get a new control arm and don't have to beat out a bushing shell and the car will be back together this afternoon.

If you tell them you're in the high mileage club, it should save you 10% off parts (I think, its been a few years since I've been to a dealer).

A VCOA membership would show its value here too...
