My car has suddenly developed a bad idle, '93 945T 900

'93 945T, about 160,000 miles.

A couple weeks ago I had a problem where the car wouldn’t start – at first I thought it might be the starting motor but when I cleaned up the battery connections and tightened them down very snuggly, the car was running fine… for a couple weeks.

Two days ago it started hesitating while I was driving, like the engine was cutting out briefly, and it died at a stoplight (started right back up). Yesterday it had gotten much worse and the engine was struggling to idle and would die if I lifted my foot off of the accelerator for more than a few seconds. It would always start right back up though. It is also cutting out while I drive down the road but not dying.

In the past year I've replaced the spark plugs / wires, distributor cap, rotor, and fuel filter. About two years ago I replaced the rpm sensor and fuel pump relay.

My gas tank is probably three quarters full with premium gas, I have no reason to suspect the gas having water in it. Also, while I forgot to check for codes though I can say that the "check engine light" did not come on, I'll check it tonight.

Any ideas? I'm thinking that it could be the fuel pump but really I have no idea.

    Size advantage, '93 945T 900

I must believe that your 945 gives you a lot more room to put toys, tools, and family in compared to a Camry that is only 2 years younger. Is it realy in better condition or does it look nice?

See if it idles better with the AMM unplugged. Checking the codes may provide you with some hints as well.

    Good luck!

Yep, looks like it was the AMM. I unplugged it, plugged it back in, and rapped the top of it with my knuckles. My car runs fine now.

A week or so ago I had taken off the cover to the air filter to see what condition it was in (it's fine), I must have jostled the AMM connection or something when I removed the cover.

      Thanks for the tip!

You know, this is what I'm going to miss about my Volvo. Sure, it breaks down periodically, but the fixes are usually pretty simple if you can read the signs. I was just given a '95 Toyota Camry (besides my Volvo I also have a '99 Honda Accord), I really can't keep both the Camry and the Volvo, I think I'll be keeping the Camry (better overall condition) but haven't made up my mind 100% yet.
