check engine light 200 1989

The check engine light stays on when I start my car, and goes out after a few miles. Any way to fix this?

ANSWER check engine light 200 1989

Usually Check Engine lights don't go back off until the code is reset.

The Service reminder light, which must be the #1 oh-my-god call-the-dealer thing about these cars, is simply actuated by a clock that measures miles. I've been told it's 5000 miles and also that it's 10000 miles. I don't care; I pull the bulbs out so they can never bother me.

There's a reset lever on the rear of your instrument cluster. IF you were to reach up to about where the "3" is on the clock (or 6000 rpm if you have a tach) there's a plastic lever sticking out. Push up and it should click and reset the light.

Or remove the bulb and forget about it. It's pointless 15 years down the road; just service your car according to what its needs are.

some people use the 'service engine' light to tell them when they need to change the oil. that's when it is usually reset.

My point is, at 15+ years and 200K miles, the service interval becomes irrelevant. Furthermore, a good many people follow a 3000-mile interval, which means that you're virtually never finding that your service time agrees with the recommendation of the light.

It never fails that the thing comes on 100 miles after a proper oil change is done. I think Volvo installed it as a gimmick to get people back in the door, and try to sell a $300+ service package.

hmmm, i never thought of the feature as a gimmick, but as a cool way around having a tacky sticker on the windshield with the mileage +3k hand scribbled with a ballpoint pen.

after reading your post, i tend to favor your reasoning.
