Clutch cable adjustment. 200

It's an '89 with a 5 speed. Got the new clutch in and am now having a hard time adjusting the cable. It keeps slipping, slipping, slipping when I try to pull out. When I go back under again and again the cable seems tight? And the peddle seems to have between 3/8 and 9/16 in of free play.
Question: When adjusted close to right how far would the fork (which the little half ball at the end of the cable goes in) be from the ring on the bell housing which holds the stupid rubber "bolt" that just strips when you try to adjust it be.
You get the idea...I'm trying to do this in a one stop kinda way...instead of adjusting, driving, adusting, driving, adjusting, driving, adjusting.
My goal is to just drive.
Thanks.

If it is slipping then the clutch isn't engaging fully. You mention that the cable is tight. What happens when you loosen it? If it is loose the clutch should engage completely.

I've only used the "adjust, drive, adjust" method since it's easy to perform.

If the "bolt" is stripping, will hose clamps on it stop it from moving?

I have never had to drive one to see if it was adjusted correctly or not. It is just a simple matter of removing the slack from the cable. Just grab the release lever that the cable goes into and do a push/pull on it to see if it has slack in it or not. If there is slack in it then adjust the cable up to the point where the slack just goes away and not past that. If there is no slack in it then adjust it so there is a little and then adjust it out. If for some reason the cable threads back through the block then you can try putting a small hose clamp around the cable right where it goes through the block. As far as the distance from point A to point B on your clutch cable goes, I have no idea as it has never been necessary to measure it.

      Good luck,
      Mark
